I am a 40-year-old female who could stand to lose 50-80 lbs. I want to start making the best of my gym membership. I go to the local YMCA, so there's a pretty wide variety of equipment available - treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, free weights and cable-type weight machines (sorry, not a pro at the verbiage). I'm interested in losing weight and gaining muscle/strength, and I can make it to the gym 5-6 days a week. I'm not looking to go hardcore and kill myself here. Just want a reasonable workout that will give me some benefits, and that I can stick with.

My problem is, when I get to the gym, I have no idea what machines to use, in what order, on which days, how many reps, how much weight, etc. Please share your typical routine(s). Thanks!!

Strong Lifts 5x5. Down load the app ion your phone and start. There are many others. Do a search, i.e. weight lifting for beginners and find one.

Thanks! I'll check it out. I should also clarify that I'd like tips on how to balance cardio and weight lifting.

Start with alternating cardio days and strength days. I also like stronglifts 5x5

Alternate days, cardio/weights. Or start with weights and move to cardio, or start with cardio and move to weights on the dame day.

Any weight training or cardio is a good thing. Just remember don't over do it to quickly. Really listen to your body and if it hurts don't do it. You want to be sore but not so much that it hurts. Try to find a happy medium. Honestly if you are just starting out I would avoid heavy lifting for a while until you start to build more muscle. Just my opinion I would recommend lighter weights and more reps for the first few months. Like the 10-15 rep range. You want to see how your joints and muscles will react before overloading them with heavy weight. Best of luck and feel free to add me if you need friends, motivation or recipes.
