Is there a way to scan in favorite foods for faster diary entry? I was thinking about going to the store and scanning barcodes.

There is no built-in feature for this currently. The only choice is to scan barcodes directly to the Food Diary.

The My Foods list was not designed as a favorite list to store frequent items or "I plan to use these someday" items. It is only for food items that you may not find in the public Food Database through a text search or barcode search. Or the My Foods list is for items that you create and keep private so that other people can not edit them. Most items bought at grocery stores have already been entered by other users and shared with the public Food Database, so they will be searchable at the time they are logged to the Food Diary.

With that said, MFP would likely have to do a whole redesign of the database structure to allow users to add a whole shopping cart to a favorites area without also adding them to the Food Diary.

Some people scan or enter them to a meal slot on a future date. Those items should then be available in the Recent or Frequent lists. At least they used to be. I am not sure if that still works, because MFP may have made a change in how it queries your Food Diary to populate the Recent and Frequent lists. I have not tested that out in a long time.
