Hey, I'm not a heavy drinker but since moving to the UK I've noticed you really have to drink in order to socialize. My go to are usually ciders or white wines. Is there anything I could be drinking (I usually have 1 glass) that won't kill my calories for the day?
Thanks!
Thanks!

You don't have to drink. Trust me.4

When I drink I drink a spirit and soda water- so rum and soda or tequila and soda.1

Soda water with lime- looks fancy in a glass and tastes good with no calories!4

You don't have to drink but I say just make sure you keep it within your calories for the day as you would any food you would eat. I have a mixed drink a few nights a week and factor it in to my calories ahead of time.0

I have a beer or cider at the end of the day more often than not - usually it counts as my "exercise calories."0

Vodka or gin, with slimline tonic is around 70 calories for a single measure. If that's not your thing, stick with a regular glass (175 ml) of white wine, usually around 150 calories.0

I think most spirits have the least calories. So a scotch is like 70 cals? Mixed with water or soda? I think vodka may be a little bit more. Either way a lot less than wine or cider (both of which I love). But as others said, you gotta factor it in to your calorie count, although I find that if I get a bit squiffy one night a week or so it doesn't impact my diet. I like drinking and I had a lot of fun in the UK so I get it. Unless you really feel pressured to drink and you don't want to then you shouldn't, but it's ok to enjoy yourself if you feel like it.0

I too am a social drinker... I was a beer girl for the longest time. When my husband and I started this new lifestyle of ours we gave up beer totally. When we do drink now it is either Tito's Vodka with seltzer and a splash of cranberry juice or Smirnoff spike seltzers which are 90 calories. We have a wine now called FitVine and it is lower in calories, less sulfates/additives which is lower in calories than regular wine but still higher than the titos so I drink that sparingly. If you don't want to drink, don't! You can certainly be social without it. If you are like me, and enjoy it every once in a while, then make room for it in you calories, get that extra burn in and enjoy!!! Restrictions in any diet sets you up for failure. Everything in moderation... Good luck!2

Yes - distilled spirits tend to be pretty low in counts (whisky, vodka, gin et al) relative to fermented drinks (beer, wine, etc.) provided that no additional sugars/flavoring have been added after distillation. About 70-80 calories per ounce. Mix a one ounce shot with some soda water and that's a low-cal drink you can nurse for a while.
On the plus side they also have the highest alcohol content per ounce, so if getting drunk is your goal you're all set there as well.1 -
Agree with all the people who are saying hard liquor. My friends and I like to drink and we would knock back bottles of wine and beer quite often. It definitely contributed to my weight gain. Now I drink vodka with some kind of flavored bubbly water. Three drinks are a little over 300 calories vs a 500 - 600 calorie bottle of wine. Maybe you could also find a friend who would do an alcohol fast with you? My best friend and I did a 30 day fast just before I started counting calories and it was nice. Drinking your calories is not very smart unless you're just having a glass or two. Personally alcohol makes me crave greasy food which definitely won't fit into my budget after a night of drinking.2

You do not have to drink. Alcohol is a carcinogen. Just say club soda and lime please, or whatever sounds good to you and enjoy the drink and the company. You might inspire others to lower their alcohol or quit. This is peer pressure in the worst sense.4

Most people in UK (I'm British) have the mentality that you have to drink to enjoy yourself, I'm virtually teetotal and enjoy myself as much as the next person on a night out alcohol free. You should follow your own path and not feel pressurised to drink if you don't want to.2

If you usually only have one glass then there's not much that'll kill your calories for the day considering a glass of white wine is only like 150 cals. But if I'm going out and know I'll be having lots of drinks I usually go with something tasty and then switch to vodka sodas with lime because then it's only like 70 cals.0
