Interest in where one went to high school.

I live in the St. Louis area and here there what we call the "St. Louis question". That is "Where did you go to high school?" I'm curious if this really a quirk of people here or do people around other similarly sized cities say Cincy, Indy or Pittsburgh ask this question to other locals as well. It makes sense that people from larger cities do not ask this question as much since there would be more schools and one might get an answer of some school they are not familiar with.
