Alcohol and water

Been on vacation and did 2 to 3 days of overeating. The rest of the week has been at maintenance so far. So, Ive gained maybe 5 pounds from the excess food, but since I've also been drinking more alcohol than usual I know I can suffer from dehydration. I don't want to mistake that for water retention, so my question is:

Can alcohol be blaimed for water retention? I never thought about it because I rarely drank until this week. Yes, I know alcohol has calories.

Alcohol absolutely causes water retention. Oddly enough, since alcohol dehydrates you, it actually motivates your body to hold onto more water. Also, I'm pretty sure that you didn't gain 5 pounds from food in 2 or 3 days of overeating. That's a pretty mammoth amount of calories (over maintenance by 6,000 calories per day at the very least?).

Most of that 5 pounds is water.

Well, you can't really gain 5 Lbs of actual fat in 2-3 days...so you have your answer regardless of whether it was alcohol causing water retention...more sodium than usual...glycogen replenishment from eating more...more waste in your system from eating more, etc...

6000 in 2 days I'm sure lol. To be honest, I don't what my maintenance rate is I've been on a deficit for so long. I don't know if I've truly been overeating OR eating at maintenance for what I burn.
