Detox Questions

Hey you guys,

I wanted to ask if anyone has tried a really good detox program (pills)? That I can purchase at a health food store, vitamin shoppe, etc. I have taken the complete liver cleanse and it was OK. I was thinking of using ACV making several herbal teas (using some with senna leaf) and making broths, bone broths, and high protein and veggie soups. But I just wanted some feedback on different detox supplements or programs you have tried. I am withdrawing from psychiatric drugs and really want to transition to herbal medication and also aid in my weight loss efforts. Any advice will help.

Thanks!

I hope you are under the care of a doctor if you are withdrawing from medications. If not, you need to see a doctor and do not take any other medications (prescription or OTC) without their input first.
Also, cleanses and ACV are useless. A calorie deficit is all that matters for weight loss.

The majority of these flushes and detox's are just a money grab per my Dr and Nutritionist. Some teas can help flush the body of fluids basically "diuretics" but the best is pure and simple water. I looked into this very thing a few years ago when I had inflammation of my liver due to a medication and I also have a non-alcoholic fatty liver. Which the FDA says approximately 30% of the US population has. Which there was a magic pill

You should never have withdrawal effects from stoping antipsychotics. It is dangerous and especially if you were taking benzos or stimulants of some kind. You need doctor care to slowly titrate down and even then it can still be dangerous. Consult your doctor immediately.

I should have been more specific, I have tapered and have done so safely. I will not be seeing the same doc and due to some insurance issues that is why I have decided to taper but I have been having withdrawal symptoms as I have been on it for years, its inevitable. I will still look into seeing a doc. but I do believe there are natural methods that can help just wasn't sure if anyone else has tried anything that works strictly for detox. And yes you can get symptoms, they aren't terrible but they are there (headaches, itching, to name a few). I have no choice but to get off right now to save myself from quitting meds suddenly since it will be awhile until i can see another doc. But, I also believe that there are some herbal remedies that help. I know our bodies detox naturally but I also know drugs are very damaging to the liver and wasn't sure if anything natural would help.

I know the weight loss and psych. are different I just wanted to add in why I was seeking detox.

Sorry for any confusion I should have given more detail.

Thanks for clarifying. If you feel you may have liver damage, giving your body time to heal and a healthy lifestyle are probably the best things you can do. There are independent studies that show come herbal remedies MIGHT make a difference, but most of them are not peer reviewed and are very small, i.e. n=<10. None of the studies are conclusive.
Hopefully you can get into a new doctor soon.

    Two separate things.

For coming off psychiatric drugs, talk to your doctor. Period. We cannot help you with that. Probably you will need to taper, but it depends on the drug and why it's prescribed. Same with alternative treatment options.

For weight loss, detox or herbal medication or liver cleansing or what not has nothing to do with anything. A calorie deficit is what's needed. It's obviously also beneficial to eat a healthful diet, and for some of us that, and exercise, can be beneficial for emotional/mood/overall wellbeing things too.

You always need to taper as cold turkey can be fatal.

Depends on the drug, we have no clue what she's talking about, what her dosage is, etc., which is why I said talk to her doctor. For the most part, based on what I assume (but do not know) she's talking about, I also think tapering is necessary, which is why I mentioned it.

I've always wondered how adding more crap (herbal remedies, detox pills, powders and elixirs, etc.) into your system is supposed to make it cleaner. Seems to me that just drinking plain old water and taking a break from all the excess crap you intake might be a better plan...But I'm no expert... :/

P.S. I agree that it's not safe to come off psych meds without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. And I'm not sure how effective "herbal remedies" are for managing psychiatric conditions. Be careful with self-medication.

Coming off psychiatric medication while not under the care of a doctor can have disastrous consequences, including psychotic breaks that lead to hospitalization and in severe cases death.

Adding my voice to the chorus of please make sure you're under adequate care while coming off psychiatric meds.

Agree with all of the above. Psych meds need to be weaned and under the close supervision of a health care provider. No herbal drug will adequately replace a psychiatric medication. Also, the only thing you need to "detox" are your liver and your kidneys. Save your money on the pills.

While there are natural remedies said to support the liver, I feel like it would be irresponsible for me to encourage you on this path. Instead, I see from your profile you are a college student - college has started here - when does it start for you and don't you have some sort of health insurance there?

Psych meds have been literally life saving for my brother. 20 years ago he attempted to treat his condition with solely non-pharmaceuticals and it just didn't work for him. A few years back what he was taking then stopped working and it was a bad time until his treatment team got him on a new set of meds. He is also eating lots of whole foods and getting quite a bit of exercise and is doing great now. He'd gained weight when he was in the hospital but lost it and has maintained that loss for two years.
