Anyone experience headaches that don't go away after having mirena in for over a year??? I'm seeing my OB soon and I'm contemplating having it taken out b/c I've had a headache for 9 days that isn't relieved by ANYTHING and I've tried everything from massage and acupuncture to homeopathic meds to migraine meds and beyond. When this first started it was headache and nausea so I took a PT and it was negative of course but I realized that I could no longer feel the strings which really wigged me out. Now I'm thinking I want him to take it out just for good measure in case it is the mirena- and just go back to the pill. Any input on your experience with mirena will help, thanks.

I have had the Mirena for years and I have not had any issues with it at all.

If you have had the Mirena for over a year, why are you assuming that it is the cause?

I'm not assuming that's the cause, as you can see I've tried everything else so I'm kinda grabbing at straws here. I'm also having crazy acne, cramping, discharge, and sore nipples. Which is another reason I took a preg. test in the beginning. I thought maybe since I can't find the strings it's like wedged somewhere and not working right or something?? I dunno. I just want the headache to stop.

I haven't had any issues with it either. The only thing I don't like is I'll have PMS symptoms and no period, but it never lasts this long. I haven't had a period basically since I had it put in. And periods are SO bad for me-they last WEEKS sometimes months, and I get maybe a week or two off of it before the next one starts... Maybe this is just PMS symptoms again really bad? I've also had abnormal paps every single time I've had a pap, and had several biopsies and a LEEP procedure. My doc wanted to do surgery (conization) so I got a 2nd opinion since I've never had kids and I'm afraid of taking out a big portion of my cervix before I do... and the 2nd doc said it wasn't necessary that we'll just keep a close eye on it and if it turns cancerous then we'll do something. But one thing they BOTH agree on is that the mirena wasn't the culprit of the bad paps and neither of them wanted to take it out. I dunno. It's a foreign object inside of my body and I've never had a baby up there.

Have you had an MRI? Headaches are not really a big side-effect of Mirena....matter of fact, they really shouldn't be caused by Mirena at ALL because Mirena's hormones stay localized to the uterus (ie: very, very little enters the bloodstream). You should see your Primary care doctor FIRST about this and then, after appropriate testing for other issues such as diabetes, thyroid, etc (and a realistic look at your lifestyle....stress??), go see your Ob/Gyn as a last resort.

<----On her second Mirena. Has been a Migraine sufferer since 3rd grade. Migraines have almost disappeared while on Mirena. Oh, and I'm an Ob/Gyn....

edit: Mirena's don't cause abnormal paps....a virus does. Human Papilloma Virus. Your immune system is constantly fighting it, just like it constantly fights off the common cold. That's why you can "just watch" it with repeat paps...your immune system is much better at fighting things than we are. Has NOTHING to do with your Mirena (and Mirena won't make it worse).

Yeah I know logically all of these things (I'm a BSN prepared RN lol) I saw my PCP already. I'm going to the OB/gyn just because I can't feel the strings anymore. I'm just trying to come up with something, anything that will make this headache go away. I've been taking flexaril in case it's my TMJ, she checked my CBC CMP and TSH everything was normal. I'm actually feeling a lot better today than I have been, but it's not completely gone. I'll go back to my PCP if it continues.

Also, I just recently went from a level 1 trauma center ER working nights, to working days in a CVICU and I also broke up with my boyfriend and kicked him out of my house as well as started dieting and using advocare products...so I've had a lot of changes lately that would more likely explain the headache. I just haven't been very "stressed" about these things b/c they are all good moves for me in a positive direction. Maybe since I've been "stuffing" these issues down they're manifesting in other ways. Thanks for all your input everyone.

If I were you, I'd have it taken out just for peace of mind, then you know for sure if the Mirena is the cause or not instead of constantly wondering. The only downside to that is you'll probably end up getting your period and I would only hope that it doesn't come back with a vengeance.

I've considered going on Mirena but I've heard so many bad stories about it and so I decided against it. I'm interested in hearing the outcome of your condition though, it sounds like you're in quite a bit of pain

    Best wishes :flowerforyou:
