Pregnancy Weight Gain

I'm almost 28 weeks pregnant at the moment. At my doctor appointment at 20 weeks, my doctor and I agreed that we were both concerned about my weight gain at that point which was 16 pounds. She suggested I start tracking calories and going back to the gym a few times a week for cardio and weight training. I have been going to the gym consistently for about two months now, have maintained my current weight, and have been doing really well staying within my calorie budget except for the last week; I want to eat everything all the time and I have been going over my calories by a little or a lot every day which I know will catch up with me soon despite being consistent in the gym. I don't want to be the pregnant woman who gains a ridiculous amount of weight. I figure if I don't gain too much, I won't have too much to lose once my daughter is born. My doctor recommends that I can gain up to 25 pounds for my weight range but that 20 is better, and I'm already very close to that with 12 weeks to go. Are there any women out there who managed to stay within the recommended weight gain during their pregnancies and how did you manage it?

I had an appointment in my second trimester where I saw a big weight jump. My care team was pretty surprised and told me to lay off the sweets. I gained 40lb during my pregnancy. After I had my son and got rid of all the water, I had 15lb to loose to get back down to my prepregnancy weight.
The fact that you are active and making conscious efforts to eat reasonably will pay off in the end. Pregnancy weight gain is different for every woman. I know women who gained 60lb then after everything settled out they were only 15lb away from their pre pregnancy weight. If you are only going over by a little I wouldn't worry about it.
Congrats on the baby:-)5 -
Yes, I stayed within recommended weight gain during all three pregnancies, despite restrictions in activities and partial bedrest. It was not by choice or incredible willpower: I had gestational diabetes, which came with a very strict eating plan0

I've always heard 28+ lbs is a proper weight gain during a pregnancy. You haven't reached that yet. I wouldn't do any diet program while pregnant just my opinion. I would watch what I eat, exercise if I can and strive to maintain if possible but during pregnancy isn't the time to worry too much about the gain.2

I've had 3 kids and each gained different amounts (20-60lbs), and able to lose all the weight within 6 months afterwards. I don't feel that +16lbs at 28 weeks is that bad. I would just add in some walking/light cardio and log your food to see if anything jumps out at you. Try and choose nutrient-dense foods and lessen the amount of fried food and sweets. From what I remember, you need 2000-2500 calories within the 2-3 trimester (or slightly more even).0

Just had my second and both pregnancies I was about the same as you. With my son I started at 170 and with my daughter started at 156. Went up to 200Ibs by the end of both but was considered to be healthy still. Both my kids were almost the same weight too 8Ibs 5 oz and 8Ibs 3 oz.
My midwives and me were never concered with my weight gain because all my blood work and other tests always came back normal. After my son the weight came off pretty fast. Don't stress to much about it.
Good luck

I gained 50, 50, and 35 with my pregnancies...the last one was a month premature, or I probably would have made it to 50 there too...I was active and fit the whole time, focused on quality food and getting all my food groups every day, but not calorie counting.0

I gained 45 lbs with my singleton and 50 lbs with my twins. Neither doctor was concerned at any point about my weight gain. They both told me the "average" and of course I was over both times. Um, I was too fat and tired (mostly towards the end) to "watch what I ate and stay active". Especially after the first trimester. I know the weight falls all off eventually so I really wasn't concerned. I ate when I was hungry and indulged occasionally. Good luck! I know you posted this somewhere else...hope you get more info this time around but the BEST advice is to ignore all of our experiences because they are just that OUR experiences and 100% listen to your dr and do everything he/she tells you to do. Pregnancy is a long journey and can seem like it's forever but do your best to focus on the what's directly in front of you.0

It's different for everyone. It's a shame to pick an arbitrary number to stress pregnant moms out about. It's hard enough being pregnant without worrying about weight gain. I say switch doctors to someone who doesn't freak you out about such a silly thing. (Obviously if there are other health issues, I stand corrected!! I mean this advice for a low risk pregnancy)0
