Step calculations

I did the math useing formula to figure out the amount of calories I burn for my weight at my weightby walking a mile at moderate pace and then dividing the steps taken to walk tha mile. I end up with .0345 calories per step. The ap says I burned 15 calories for 2031 steps yet the math I get 70 calories burned . How does this app calculate the calories burned ?
