BMI vs. waist to height

Everytime I am getting a BMI reading over 27 saying that my ideal weight would be up to 83kg. When I do the waist to height ratio it gives me a 49.
I think the BMI is only for average people with average body. It doesn't take in to consideration if you work out and have a big chest or not.
It is frustrating to see that I am obese in most fitness applications because there only BMI counts. OK, I have still 3.5 kg too much but that doesn't make me obese.
Are you experiencing the same? What are your thoughts?
