Fitbits, are they worth it?

Hello,

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Fitbit. I'm not into exercise and I use my phone to count steps - however wondered whether a Fitbit might make me more motivated to go to the gym/exercise more.

I also like the calorie function. My colleague has one and at any given time she can see the calories she's used up via exercise and also taking into account her BMR. I thought that was clever.

So wondered - do you love or loath wearable fitness devices?

I had in mind the Fitbit charge 2 if I do get one.

Thanks
K

There are MANY, MANY threads about this, so take a look through some of them for some great opinions/ advice.

Personally, I love my wearable tech. It isn't 100% accurate or anything (even with a HR monitor or a chest strap), but I find it to be really motivating to see how it fluctuates over time. I take it as a a "how do I compare over time" vs. a "how many exact calories did I burn today" measure. It's also interesting to get information about your sleep cycles.

I agree with the above. Some people love them, some not so much. Read some of the threads to get an idea of what it offers and then decide if that's something you want. I'm in the not so much crowd. I do sometimes like seeing the number of steps but I hate wearing something on my wrist when I'm sweaty and it doesn't seem to measure anything but steady state cardio very well.

One piece of advice I have is don't give it as a gift and then get all bent out of shape if the recipient doesn't want to wear it. That's annoying.

It was a great tool for me on top of an OCD like exercise, stats, and data minded person I am. Seems more fashionable accessory for my wife

I was in the same boat a couple years ago...I didn't think it would help but my husband convinced me that a couple hundred dollars wouldn't be wasted even if I wore it for 1 year...besides it has a watch on it...

I have found it very motivating and I am more active now than ever....I love the challenges and seeing my circles fill in etc. and I have purchased one for swimming too...or when I am at the beach etc.

I love mine; I have the FitBit Alta HR and it helps me to monitor both my quality of sleep and HR that changes based on medications / exercise (I consider walking around my house, going up and down my house stairs, running errands, to be exercise). I take it off to shower and switch arms at night. To get the most out of it sync with a PC and or an iPad / tablet. There are a lot of reports / trends that you can better appreciate with a larger screen.

    Thanks guys, that's really helpful.

I did get one this evening. Just charged it up. I think I will use it for the motivation. See how I get on. I can always eBay it if i don't wear it much :-) but I think I will!
