I've got a Fitbit Alta but want to move to an Apple Watch, question is does it track total calories, resting and active like my Fitbit?

And if you have one do you like it?

It does and surprisingly it seems to be better than my Garmin at estimating active calories (much more conservative).

That said, the Apple Watch is cool but it's kind of stuck in the middle of things. It's not the greatest for fitness tracking purposes and at the same time, it's not the greatest for non-fitness purposes either. If you want the watch strictly for fitness, there are better options. If you want the watch for all-around usage, then it's a reasonably good choice.

Since I ultimately used my watch for fitness and run tracking I decided to ditch the Apple Watch and go with a dedicated Garmin. It's much better for activity-related tracking (including functionality for on-the-fly run statistics, etc.) and provides enough non-activity tracking functionality (phone notifications, etc.) to keep me happy.
