Soreness - Rest/Light Work Out/Other?

I've heard competing arguments on whether or not you should take a rest day if you are sore from an intense workout.

Backstory:

I have been walk/jogging 3-5 miles a day over the past 3 months as I have been trying to recuperate from a foot injury that has kept me in a walking boot for over 4 months.

Last night I resumed a kickboxing/boxing class that I haven't attended since I got injured a year ago. Needless to say, I feel muscles that I forgot I had.

What is everyone's opinion on dealing with the soreness (not injury related--but strength/weakness related).

Would walking/running the day after one of these workouts help or would a rest day be a better approach until my body adapts to the new routine again?

I would just go for a walk...doing nothing is about the worst thing you can do. Just ease into things and don't try to go to fast with getting back into things.

Have you considered an upper body workout to give your lower body a rest?

This ^^ The day after an intense workout I get really really stiff when I am doing nothing - I walk and find that it helps immensely.

Rest, then walk and stretch! I can't tell you whether that takes less than a day or three days, but your body will. I'm prone to DOMS so my soreness usually gets worse before it gets better. Also, ime, potassium, hydration, and an epsom salt bath will help you feel better faster!
