Post weightlifting metabolic increase?

Hey there,
I've just started SL and am curious now as to the overall health effect of weight training.
I've heard that when people do weight training it can cause a metabolic increase for up to 14 hours afterwards? Can anyone tell me what exactly is happening during that time? Does it just mean that you continue to burn more calories as your muscles repair?
Also, I noticed that my resting heart rate has increased a bit (after trending down for a awhile) and wondering if that is connected in some way to this new routine? Just a little curious and thought I'd ask all the smart weight training people here on MFP.

Your resting heart rate should not permanently increase.0
