Strength Training

Hi guys I just started strength training and lifting. My question is should I strength train 5 days a week or 3. According to some people since i just started I should take it easy and only strength/ lift 3 times a week? I hit different muscle groups each day for example Monday back, Tuesday arms, Wednesday chest, Thursday legs and Friday a lil bit of everything. Any suggestions would help.

As a beginner, 3 days a week, each with a full body workout, is optimal. A few good beginner full body programs are All Pro's, Starting Strength, A Workout Routine, and Strong Curves.8

First, how often you train is going to depend largely on your programming, as well as your experience/training levels and your goals.
Second, since you are a beginner, I would look into a full body routine (typically they are 3-4x per week) vs a body part split (which is less optimal for someone starting out).
You can check out a list of some beginner routines here.

Yep, something like stronglifts 5 x 5 to start with (pure strength, compound lifts) three time a week.0 -
It looks like she was an avid health nut before her last pregnancy and has gained 40lbs and can not get rid of the weight gain. So, I would suggest doing a beginner program three or four times a week for a month or two (just to get the blood flowing again) and then maybe re-evaluate.
How comfortable are you doing that? What are your goals? Specifically, to loose that pregnancy weight? Or, that and something else?
How long ago was the last pregnancy?0 -
3x week is not "taking it easy" if you are doing a proper program, as mentioned above. There is a thread in the Gaining Weight Body building forum about various lifting programs.2

Full body program such as Starting Strength will benefit you more than most things out there, but it's dependant on your goals. Also lifting isn't easy unless you are winging it and lazy.
Any split isn't going to do much for you as a novice lifter.1 -
I agree with the full body routines 3 times a week. Throw cardio sessions in on the off days. Take one day off a week for extra recovery. I've been lifting/body weight training for 30 years and that seems to work best for me. Hope this helps and have fun2

I couldn't agree more, with your exact routine.
I am also a 30 year veteran, and I do the exact same thing.0 -

This right here. No split needed just the Starting Strength program for some nice strength gains. Run it for a couple of months and decided what you want to do. This would give you a sound foundation to build on and is based on years of experience.0 -
Thanks for your suggestions guys0
