How to stop my salt cravings?

Some people crave chocolate, soda, ice cream, etc etc but I literally just crave salt. Like I would use to suck on pretzels just to eat the salt.. now, it's like I'm trying to go on a diet but I can't stop thinking/ cheating on my diet because of it. :( I know it sounds weird

I sometimes shake a little salt onto celery when I need something salty.

Have you tried dill pickles? Mine have 0 calories and 280 mg of sodium for 1 oz.

Or you could just eat salt straight. I love Selina coarse Celtic sea salt.

  • Ever try that NoSalt salt? Or even Braggs Amino Acids? I salt things with NoSalt and use Bragg Amino Acids for soy sauce replacements.

Do you actually just eat salt? Because I have to admit sometimes I do. Weird, and I try to keep the desire in check, but I can pour it out and lick it straight up. My favourite alcoholic drink? The Margarita. My favourite part of a Margarita? The salt on the rim.

I gave it up for Lent and it made no difference on my weight.

I gave it up again after suspecting that it was interfering with my sleep, and again, made no difference on my weight.

I love salty snacks.. particularly chips... I'd kill a family bag every couple of days.
recently changed up to eating salted sunflower and pumpkin seeds.. eventually switched to just plain sunflower and pumpkin seeds now. took a few weeks of transition.
    just my two cents
  • Salt was the hardest thing for me to get over. Bensons table tasty is a good option but I found the only thing that worked for me was to do 30 days with no salt. Now salt tastes so strong. I don't know if you cook but if you do, herbs and spices, along with vinegar, will give you flavour without the sodium . But salt is actually a really common addiction so you're doing nothing wrong !

Why are you trying to give up salt? Is it because of the types of product it comes on, like crisps? Because salt in itself will not cause weight gain. What it may do if you eat a lot of it is cause weight retention, but that isn't actual "weight" as such as it is just temporary. I also prefer salt over sweet and I tried to give up crisps once. BAD mistake, I lasted about a week before I binged on about 6 packs of crisps in a row! Now I have a bag a day, I just fit it into my calories for the day. I'm happy and losing weight.

I like sliced salted radishes. Homemade kale chips are another low calorie option - buy the flat leaved lacinato kale, lay on a baking sheet in a single layer, spray with extra virgin olive oil, shake salt and other seasonings, bake for 15 - 20 minutes at about 400.

How's your blood pressure? If it's normal you don't need to restrict sodium. But you might ask your doctor next time you see him in case there are health related reasons for your cravings.

Used to be ... when I needed salt, I would crave potato chips.

Then I started with MFP and potato chips were off the menu ... at least not on a daily basis.

Now I make a point of salting my lunch and dinner, and after work I have 100 grams of cottage cheese with cucumber slices and radishes ... and I make sure to salt the lot!

I rarely crave potato chips anymore.

Are you getting enough salt - minerals, in general? Are you trying to avoid salt? Why? Have you gone from a high salt diet to a low salt diet? What diet are you trying to go on? Why? Are you drinking way more water? Salt in itself will not interfere with your weight loss, and hardly with your general health - but salt is often used as a flavor enhancer for calorie dense foods, and as a preservative for nutrient poor foods. Add enough salt to your (homemade) food to make it taste good, and lick some salt if you crave it and it's not time for a meal.

I keep a jar of pink salt in my bathroom and eat about half a gram of it before going to bed most nights. It's not to satisfy a salt craving, but rather to stock up on sodium ions in hopes of avoiding leg cramps in my sleep. It seems to help. If you want salt and don't want calories, you can eat salt. It's ok.
