If you have an active job, does this inhibit your fitness?

My husband used to be very focused on his fitness goals. He'd go to the gym and lift heavy (and looked good). And he's always had active jobs - never a desk job that I know of. But ever since he moved to the states from the UK - he found a starter job at a hardware store (in their gardening section). He's on his feet all day and lifts mulch and whatnot - active in many ways.

We used to workout together. Now he still goes with me to the gym but just spots me - never works out. He claims he's too sore from working. He also doesn't eat nearly as much as he needs to (if he has such an active job position).

I guess the point of this post is to seek out others who have laborious jobs - how do you maintain your fitness simultaneously if at all? Is it a bit redundant to do both?

Although I am grateful my husband is so supportive of my goals - I'd like him to work on his own again.
