Workout recovery food question (regarding almond milk)

Hi there,

I read that a glass of chocolate milk is a good food for recovery after a workout.

However, I have recently tried chocolate almond milk, and although it's not as creamy, it's an acceptable substitute taste wise for me.

Is it just as good nutritionally (re: being a recovery food)?

Sometimes I work out late at night so I don't want to eat anything too heavy, but still support building muscle.

If I sound inexperienced - that's because I am - I'm only 4 weeks into strength training!

Thanks in advance!

What's important is that you hit your target calories for the day, not so much as to when you have those calories.

Almost milk has surprisingly low protein.

The magic of milk is that it contains a good amount of protein and fat and sugar to refuel after a workout. Almond milk is a quarter of the macronutrients. I love almond milk, but it isn't going to give you the same nutritional profile as whole milk unless you drank 4+ cups of the stuff. Full fat Soy milk will be a better choice if you still need a dairy alternative.

Thanks for the replies! Yes I noticed that almond milk has low protein (which puzzles me greatly!)

I realize eating enough is important - but I also thought that having a recovery food boosts your muscle building? (again, speaking as a total newbie)

I don't necessarily need a dairy alternative so regular chocolate milk is fine - I just find if I have it in my fridge, the family drinks it, whereas if I have the almond milk, everyone leaves it alone lol
