I had weight loss surgery on 3/16/17. It has NOT been an "easy" way out. I have a strict diet to follow and if I don't it holds me accountable.

you look amazing! Thanks for sharing your pics and being so inspiring. No need to be defensive about surgery. It's a lifesaver for many people and I've never met anyone who made the decision lightly.

You truly look amazing. I certainly would never think surgery is an easy way out. How have you adapted since the surgery? Lifestyle changes? If you don't mind me asking.

Immediately after surgery you’re thrown into a crazy new life. You have to make sure you’re getting your fluids in and taking your vitamins. I have been doing well, I think. I don’t get my fluids in like I’m supposed to, so that’s the most difficult part for me. I can only consume 5 oz at each meal. And focus mainly on protein. It can be really expensive with vitamins and protein shakes. I’m supposed to have 2 protein shakes a day, but a 4-pack costs about $8 and it’s not possible for me to spend that much money on them.. I need to find cheaper alternatives, but sometimes my stomach can’t handle it.

Mentally, it’s been a struggle. Food has always been my coping skill and I physically can’t turn to food or it will make me sick. It’s like losing a best friend. So, I have been dealing with depression. With having financial problems, relationship issues, and my dad living with me due to his health issues, I’m beyond stressed. But, each day I continue to press on because I know that I will overcome this! I have had some slip ups lately and need to get back on track with measuring my foods and such. It’s just difficult with my busy schedule to take out the measuring cup at each meal when I usually eat all three meals at work. I’m surrounded by food each day, the unhealthy kind. I work at a movie theater and popcorn is limitless. And it’s the worst snack you can possibly have, they’re empty calories.

And thank you everyone for all of your positive feedback about it not being the easy way out.. I’ve just gotten a lot of that from other members on this site.

You do look great. Keep heading toward your goal. It's definitely not easy. I used to follow a column in the newspaper of a guy who had the surgery and he talked about having to deal with anger and other strong emotions and how it was surprising to him, because before he used food to cope and now he couldn't. You don't get the pleasure of eating without thinking about it anymore, which is stressful for sure. As for the shakes, any chance that you can make your own for a lot cheaper? I know that the protein powder you buy is pricey but I would think that it would last a lot longer than buying pre-made shakes. Also, have you joined a bariatric surgery support group? If you're not a part of one that may be a great resource as well because unless you've gone through it you can't know what it's like to deal with all of the food issues afterwards, along with what to do with the emotions you can no longer medicate with food. Good luck- you will get there I'm sure.

I really appreciate such a detailed response. The reason I was asking is I know someone who is very overweight (400+ I would guess), she has many health issues. She told me she had to see a new doctor and that he recommended weight loss surgery and that all the doctors she sees always try and talk to her about it. I was surprised because she never mentioned it. Anyway, she completely dismissed the idea and changed the subject. She would need a lot of counseling for dealing with food issues after the surgery I would imagine.

You are so close to your goal weight. Amazing accomplishment. I am sorry for all the other personal issues that you are dealing with right now. You seem to have a great attitude, being healthy is a great motivator. You got this:)

Congratulations on your terrific loss. What I love most about the results of my loss is the increased mobility.

Have you thought about making your own protein powder? You can check if your macros line up with the $8 product by creating a "recipe" on MFP. I got my base ingredients from Bulk Barn.
When I figured out I could add the trace ingredients by adding a crushed multivitamin I was off to the races.
