I have tried over and over again to los the weight and at this point I need to drop 30-40 lbs to be at a healthy weight and to help my self confidence.

I’m struggling a lot with self control with food and motivation to go to the gym. Anyone have any tips?

Try foods high in protein. It sticks with you longer. I'm struggling too.

Find a routine that suits around going to the gym, set realistic smaller goals (to get to your bigger goal), set yourself a meal plan for the day and try not to deviate.

Don't look for motivation, it comes and goes. Focus on discipline and consistency and make healthy eating and exercise habits. Just do it, don't think about it, focus.

Thank you for this. Makes sense and very true.

Don't do it alone. Find or make at least one friend who wants to do things with you that are healthy and active. I did not have much success until I found a friend who was willing to work with me as a trainer/companion a couple of days a week.

I began attending yoga and other group classes at the (dreaded) gym and made a point of beginning some friendships there. It is so much nicer when you can chat for a few minutes about your week and begin to learn more about others.

Now, I have a weekly hiking friend, a few friends at yoga and a couple others for activities. Conversation makes it WAY more enjoyable.

Self control is a learned skill and a gradual thing. Small changes over time help make sure your brain doesn't freak out and think you are starving.

I began just by making small substitutes (like veggies over Doritos) a little at a time. Also, pick things you either do enjoy, or can learn to enjoy. I like cucumbers with a little sour cream and pepper; it was easier to eat those rather than AN ENTIRE BAG of Salt and Vinegar chips. I still love to have the occasional Nachos or ice cream, just not as often. Too much deprivation too soon is a recipe for failure.

Again, don't do it alone - find someone who is interested in better (for you) foods.

I'm older, so my path is a little slower, but I have managed to shed 40+ pounds and gained some respectable muscle in a year (most of this was done before I discovered this MFP. I would not have done that without the companionship of others.

MOST IMPORTANT: don't worry about the pounds; just work on feeling healthier. The pounds will follow.

Sorry for long answer, but I'm pretty chatty.
