I didn't consider myself a beginner when I found this site. I already read a lot about nutrition, and had switched white for wheat, added many fruits and vegetables, and tried to eat "good" fats. However, was I in for a surprise when I joined MFP!!!

SHOCK! My calories were out of sight. I was eating healthy things, but way too much. Portion control!

SHOCK! A cup of the raisins that I buy is 500 calories! My entire daily goal is 1800. Now I eat about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of raisins depending on how many cals I have left at the end of the day, and a bunch of carrots/celery to fill me up.

SHOCK! My fat intake was sky high and my calcium was only 30% of what I needed.

SHOCK! Just taking a quick walk at the end of the day does NOT offset the many snacks I used to eat like I thought.

Anything SHOCKING to you when you joined MFP or anywhere along your fitness journey?

I just noticed I have the exact same walker :) I had to take the toy bar off it because my baby was chewing on it and getting it too far in the back of her throat and spitting up all over the tray..lol :)

I bought it at a rummage sale for $2. (I love buying used for a fraction of the price.) It had a plastic bear on each side until my daughter broke one off! She hasn't used it in awhile though, because now she is walking on her own.

I was a "beginner" and was shocked at how hard I had to work to burn off just 400-500 calories. I was waaaaay overestimating how many calories exercise burns...

I agree, I was completely shocked to find out how many calories I was actually eating. My fat was low, but my calories were really high. Shocked to find out what actual portions sizes were once I started measuring everything. Went to measuring nothing when I cooked, to measuring out every single thing.
What a lot of work:grumble: but worth it:wink:

I was shocked to see how much sodium is in everything you buy prepared! I knew it in theory, but never paid any attention to it. When you're trying to lose those last 10 pounds like me now, it really makes a difference.

Since I hit 20 pounds lost and 10 to go I've been at a virtual standstill for about 2 weeks. So frustrating! :grumble:

ugh sodium....I hate sodium....I guess I never realized how its in everything....I had what I thought would be a pretty healthy lunch one day...

pumpkin soup, a half a bagette sandwhich w/ turkey, cheddar let. and tom....
okay the cals were cool...but the sodium was omg...almost my daily limit.....it takes getting used to but omg there is 1100 mg of sodium in a bagette bread???????????? huh!

    lol
    hugs,

Sodium is a big one. I really don't care about sugars, but that was high - not from sugar but from fruit, etc.

I just ate too many calories with large portions - of everything. Try eating a serving of granola:laugh:
  • I was shocked to find out what they really meant by sedentary, and that I wasn't it even before I got my current job. I was also shocked to find out I'm sensitive to a couple foods.
