Hunger Binges help!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'll give it a shot.

I have been finding out that when I do very hard workouts and still stay within my calories for the day, not extending past my bonus calories, I am starving for the next 2 days! For example, I did the Tour de Cure and I could not eat very much food that day. My body just refuses to take in any more calories than it needs to so I have to force myself to eat something right after the ride.

So here comes day 1 after the ride, I'm eating everything in sight!! I hate nuts and I went out and bought a 5lb of pistacchios and just started eating them. Due to this type of eating, I've made sure to keep the binging on high protein and low carb foods. Egg whites, pistacchios, greek yogurt and only eating whole grain pita pocket sandwiches with avocado and a meat.

This has never happened before and it never fails. I also end up drinking 1/2 to 3/4s a gallon of water over these 2 days also. Is this normal? I'm kind of thinking that it could be my body using the extra protein to help repair the physical damage from my car accident but it's such a random thing that it's hard to explain. I will say, I have now gone from a doc wanting to put a rod in my neck to I'm just feeling some pressure in the area now too. Could this actually be?

Any ideas would be great. Oh by the way, after the 2 day binge happens, I go back to eating and drinking normal just out of the blue. Thanks!

I've noticed something similar. From my experience, you are on the right track - stick with high protein low carb. I wouldn't be bothered by the cravings unless the scale and the tape measure are indicating that you are gaining.

You also mention drinking a lot of water after days like this. I don't know what you normally do, but I've been told by several sources that you should drink your body weight divided by 2 in ounces of water per day. If a person weighed 180, they would drink 90 ounces of water per day + 10 ounces for every hour of exercise.

    Good luck!

Any idea how many calories you are burning during these workouts, how many calories you are eating the next day? As for the water intake, is that 1/2-3/4 gallon each day or total? Either way, I see no prblem with it, except if its over 2 days its not enough at all!!! If its each day, its fine. I drink 8-12 cups of water every day and my body loves it.

Thanks guys, it sounds like it's normal and should be happening. In regards to the questions about the water, I hate plain water and literally have force myself to drink it every day so I add some of my amino acid powder for flavor. Now if it's the 2 days after a big huge workout, I'm drinking mega amounts of plain water and I can't stop. So it is easily about 3/4s of a gallon for the 2 days and then day 3 it just drops back down to my hate water temperament again.

Now the snacking, it is really hard to eat a solid meal like that for the two days since it feels like I'm hungry all the time. I figured the proteins would be the better choice no matter what. Now it was mentioned that unless I gain pounds that could be a problem, not necessarily. Although I do have quite a bit of weight to lose, even after my huge weight loss so far of 85 lbs, I've developed a lot of muscle and it seems like as soon as I lose fat in one area, the muscle takes over. As I said earlier it's more obvious in my quads. With all the cycling and still needing to lose fat in those areas, the muscles are still quite pronounced and forces me to up a pants size just to accommodate. Thank God for belts!

To answer the question of how many calories were burned the amount of calories burned on the day of the workout was calculated at 4,890 and it's just for that 7 hrs alone. I did much more after that because it's my normal routine. According to my food journal, my total calorie consumption that day was only 3,432 calories and I could have had up to 6,910. With everything I ate the next day, now that I look at my journal, it says I only at about 2,370 calories and even less the next day. But I'll tell you, I was eating something all the time. No wonder I felt like I was starving! lol

I guess I better do a little more tracking although I know there are certain things I must eat even when I normally don't. On my big 35 mile bike ride in 90 degree weather I couldn't eat anything after the ride but really wanted a regular Coke. I opted for a diet Coke since they ran out and I sucked it down real fast with an angus brat, no bun. My son bought me a coke and I took one sip of it and spat it out. It just tasted really damn funny afterwards and the food pickyness begins. :)
