A lot of people in here know about this excellent tool, but I'm sure some don't. And it's worth knowing about.

I had social plans today, but they fell through, and it's sunny out. So I'm taking my bike somewhere new to me and scenic to ride. I'm still figuring out where. When I don't have a route in mind, my go to is to look at the global heatmap. There are certain routes (roads, trails, whatever) that stand out as well loved among cyclists and/or runners, and there's usually a good reason. If you don't already use this tool, you should check it out.
