Adding calories earned via steps (walking)?

Hi,
I'm just hoping someone can shed some light regarding how calories work when adding them as exercise and when it's okay to do.
Normally throughout the week, I lead a lazy lifestyle (not for much longer!) as much in I sit about a lot and other than go to college, I have no other need to head out so rarely do. At weekends, I work and I'm on my feet walking about all day.
On days such as these, can I count my steps and award the calories as extra? or does it not work like this?
I don't want to add any extra if I've not actually earned it as such, but if I can then I would like too as right now I'm getting quite hungry. I have low calorie snacks prepared for myself, but eating those right now could mean going over if my steps calories don't count.
I've read lots about; if I go to the gym I can count the calories but probably best to only eat half earned back to remain on the safe side of numbers. But a little bit confused about general day to day walking etc. Does 1200 calories have any kind of assumption I may already be doing X amount of steps or anything?
Sorry to waffle, but hope my question is clear.
Thank you in advance

(I once saw someone log repairing a car and apparently burned 2400 calories doing it)
If you are finding yourself hungrier on the weekends and want to eat more, increase your calories those two days.. if you have a 500 calorie deficit, increase your calories by 250, you will still maintain some deficit but eat more due to more activity, then go back to a 500 cal deficit mon-fri
Okay, thanks very much for your reply. Sounds like an idea that would work for me, so I'll give that a try.
Thank you once again x0
