Surviving Halloween

With Halloween coming up I'm sure a lot of us are either panicking over all the temptations or trying to formulate a plan (as to not destroy their diet). To start off with, one day of extra eating will not ruin your diet. I recommend having your candy, treats, and sweets all on October 31st then getting right back on your diet. I also have thought of some Halloween ideas that will help people mind their calories:
1. Halo-top pumpkin ice cream- low calorie and higher in protein, this one is a great option. I myself will be using it to make a milkshake along with some almond milk!
2. Pop-corn- pop corn alone is generally quite low calorie, for Halloween throw some dark chocolate chips on top along with some cinnamon for a nice treat under 200 calories.
3. Dark chocolate- speaking of dark chocolate, dark chocolate generally has slightly less sugar, more flavor, and is a bit kinder to the diet.
4. Buy one candy you really like and only have a few pieces of it. For example, I like milky ways so my mom and I split a few then give the rest away to Trick-or-treaters.
5. Add some chocolate to apples or bananas for a more healthy treat.
6. Dont buy all of your candy 2 weeks before Halloween, it won't be there by Halloween- trust me.
7. Take your kids out trick-or-treating or go out alone to look at decorations for a nice walk.
8. And lastly don't sweat Halloween too much, if you're only cheat days are holidays and birthdays you are doing quite well.

Buy candy to hand out on your way home from work on the 31st. Pick a time to end handing out candy (ex 8:15pm) and the last kid before that time gets whatever is left. Oh, and buy candy you don't love.7

This. Also the one about not buying the candy two weeks before. I buy it on the day of October 31, or whatever day trick-or-treating is scheduled for our neighborhood.

Great ideas- and i like the one about the halo top and the popcorn to have some treats so I don't feel so "left out"- I will definitely buy ONLY a couple of the mini size candy bars and ONLY that- OH yeah and be sure to LOG everything!2

So true! It's easy to forget those little bits of chocolate and sugar add up.

Last year my husband and I decided we'd done enough shelling out for the last 30 years so we decided we would go out instead. We like some of the neighbourhood kids though and we didn't want to shortchange them so I picked up some large chocolate bars and some other treats and arranged them all in little Halloween gift bags. Then I went door to door dropping them off! Then my husband and I went out and had a great time ourselves. When we got home we didn't worry about candy because I'd given it all away!6

I'm handing out these things this year. I think they are disgusting. A few years ago another family in the neighborhood handed them out and I have heard several kids and parents mentioned how big a hit they were because the parents would never normally buy them for the kids.

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do. Every year I eat my kids' candy and our leftover candy until I'm sick. This is the first Halloween since I started MFP and it could be a disaster for me.4

My birthday is Halloween so I'm gonna eat a fuckton of candy and pizza that day. Then the next day, I won't.7

Some places (usually dentist offices) will do a candy buyback after Halloween where they will pay kids for their unwanted candy. I think they send the candy to troops overseas. My office did it our first year open.5 -

Just don't do it. Set a limit for how much candy you can have and then stick to it.1 -

Halloween really isn't such a huge thing here in the Uk and I have never done anything for it. Never had a trick or treater come to my flat anyway. I do, however, take advantage of the half price bags of treat size chocolate bars, skittles etc and get some in. They are not gone by Halloween as I don't really tend to have much outside of the weekend. I had to give away most of the Easter stuff I stocked up on as I just didn't get round to eating it, lol. Still have a tray of hollow chocolate eggs sat on top of my cupboard. Christmas is the more challenging time for me, treatwise.2

Same. I'm bracing for Christmas starting now by strictly losing at my desired rate without breaks. I often just keep my calories to a slight gain mid December to mid January, so if I faff about now I would end up setting my weight loss back for much longer than I'd like, especially after my latest gain.1 -
I'm a holiday scrooge, so I don't give out candy...my city is not exactly the safest place to swing the door open to folks in costumes anyway. I also don't have any children to pilfer candy from. But I do go out and buy one bag of something I enjoy when it goes on markdown November 1st0

Thankfully in my area, we almost never get trick or treaters even though there are probably about 10 kids that live on our road or nearby. Everyone descends upon the poor town 7 or 8 miles away (including my kids LOL). If I do buy candy for the others in the house or for the random trick or treaters, I make sure it is something I don't like. Which isn't that hard, since, despite loving sugar and sweet things, I really don't like that many types of candy.0

I'm lucky enough to live in a "non soliciating" apartment complex, so as a rule, we get no trick or treaters. So I don't buy candy. And I don't have kids (unless you count the 36 year old one I live with, who buys his own candy).
Now, there's a ton around work. I tend to have a "no work food" rule. If I didn't bring it, I don't eat it. It works.
I'm pretty sure I've gotten thru the last 3 Halloweens completely candy free!2 -
Halloween is not really much of an issue for me and I've never sweated it...we take our boys trick or treating...we don't buy candy to hand out because we're not home. I don't eat my kid's candy...it's their candy...and really, a little piece of candy here and there is plenty for me...candy really isn't my thing.0

I will do the snack size- or mini- size candy bars and give them out. When Halloween is over I am giving the rest to a friend o mine(a teacher) to use for her end of the week- treats. She likes to give it to the kids as they go out the door- haha1

I hardly ever eat candy and never hand it out on Halloween anymore. Nothing against the kids. Just not into it anymore.
Shelled out my share when my son was a kid but he's 35 now and has a kid of his own now. So, it's his turn to do all that.1 -
I did buy my candy already because it was a great deal but I will not eat any because the bag is not opened. Plus we had a candy buffet at work and I have plenty of candy from that to snack on.1

I've been there. My plan this year is to eat more protein than normal on Halloween, and probably slightly more calories than normal, and to look to reduce stress. There's not a ton of stress involved with this holiday, but there's not none either.1 -

This is what I want to do, but my husband and my kids still want it so I can't do that. They still eat sweets. I'll just have to rely on good old fashioned will-power. Also I'm going to put it in the freezer in the garage, so out of sight, out of mind. If they want candy, they can go in the garage and get it.3
