Hi everyone,

I live in the NY/NJ area where Bagel Shops are very common. Question is, how many calories are in a typical plain bagel from one of these deli/cafes?

Thx,

Jean

Have you tried searching the food database?

-500 if you have 1/2 smear of cream cheese and 1/2 smear of butter.
-400 without butter (1/2 smear cream cheese only).
    -300 - 350 for the bagel alone.

This but beware cream cheese since most places lay it on thick if you don't specify that you want it on the side. Most delis/bagel places around me will easily put a good half cup of CC on a bagel - this can easily add another ~300 calories.

Depends. I've bought a few and weighed them, and using a USDA entry, it came to 450 calories for the bagel alone - and that was a plain bagel!

It really depends on how big they are.

The bagel is just a vehicle to shovel in copious amounts of cream cheese.

Some bagels are dense. Others are more airy. Might need to weigh them for more accuracy.

I travel to NYC on a frequent basis for work and Zabar's on 80th and Broadway is my fav place to stop for a bagel. Their bagels are about the most dense and among the largest I have encountered in New York, and all of them are a minimum of 370 calories. The "everything" is my favorite. If I stop elsewhere in NYC for a bagel, I just go with Zabar's numbers to be safe since, again, they are the most dense I have encountered there.
