I think a better way would be cut BACK as opposed to cut OUT.
If someone is overweight and got there by eating a lot of high in added sugar foods (which can be easy to overeat) even just cutting your intake of these foods in half while keeping the rest of your diet the same will in turn cut calories and lead to weight loss which will lead to a reduction in these health risks!
I think that’s easier than trying to overhaul your whole diet anyway

Some prefer to cut back, others have to cut out. It comes down to a personal preference. I can eat a small (28g) bag of chips and be happy. If I didn't have them, I'd cave and buy a family sized bag and eat it in a couple of sitting (okay, one sitting, who am I kidding).

Others cant' have that box of small bags in the house or the box would be emptied.

There's no right or wrong to the question of moderation vs. elimination. It's personal and, in my case, depends on what we are talking about. Pop (soda) I've eliminated as I doubt I could do just one can occasionally. But chips there is no way I could eliminate.

But neither are "evil". They are both just food that I need to make choices about. Same for sugar/flour.

Find what works for you and go for it.
