    A commonly repeated story which purports to explain the phrase's origin is that goats were placed with racehorses to keep them calm. When ne'er-do-wells who wanted the horse to race badly removed it, that is, they 'got someone's goat', the horse became unsettled and ran badly.

    That's just the sort of tale that gets the folk etymology juices running. Let's just say that there's no evidence to support that story, which annoys and angers me.

    yr supposed to eat crow and words and just get the goat and then count the chickens and pennies in yr hand but not the eggs or birds in the bush

    You reminded me that my 9th grade math teacher made me cry out of frustration because she kept saying "you can't add apples and oranges" and I was so frustrated by that because I was like "yes you can its just mixed fruit"...btw I suck at math

    What a bad analogy. I would of been upset too. She wasn't even using the phrase correctly. I would send her a box of 2 apples and 3 oranges with a note that says, "here are 5 fruits but according to you there are either 2 or 3 since you can't add them."
