I'm not learning how to be skinny, I'm learning how to be healthy.
My sister-in-law had surgery. After seeing what she's gone through since, I knew following a calorie deficit was the best option for me.14 -
Before you do surgery I'm just curious when you look in the mirror or when your around other people do you notice your "flaws" first/mostly or do you admire what you like about yourself because If you feel like you dont necessarily like yourself or compare yourself to others you might have low self-esteem or lack of confidence in yourself so try noticing your good points, accepting yourself how you are, and dont compare yourself to others and that might be enough. If its not then you will at least feel happier and can make the choice to do surgery confidently. Sorry if this sounds to sappy but this is how I stopped myself from comfort eating so I thought it might help if you were doing the same. If its hormonal though then I would see if a doctor can test your levels.2

You do know that being skinny won't automatically make life perfect, even if it seems that way right now.
And I agree that you should be working towards healthy not skinny.4 -
Weight loss surgery is not a magic cure all. You can have weight loss surgery, lose weight, and then gain it all back. You must commit to a change in the way you eat with or without the surgery. Whether or not to have the surgery should not be an easy decision. You must learn the pros and cons of having it or not having it and then make an informed, intelligent decision that works for you. Weight loss surgery is not an easy choice that will instantly make you skinny. It is instead the start of hard work.6

I’ve been heavy for a while now. Recently, I considered surgery because of health problems I am having. However my Dr recommended that I wait until I get back home to do the surgery. (I live abroad) My Dr also handed me a script for a bunch of pain Meds and referred me to pain management. I decided against having surgery and against taking a bunch of drugs to mask my pain. I can’t do much exercise but I am having some success. I’ve lost 23 pounds and I feel my relationship with food changing. I have some self control now. I don’t feel the need to stress eat. I feel good. I have a long road ahead of me but I feel quite proud of myself and I finally feel like this is possible. You can do it. If I can, anyone can.14

Listen to your cousin. She might know something.3

I don't think anyone but you and your doctor can say if surgery is the best option you have.
Have you tried a calorie deficit with or without other ways of eating (keto, OMAD, etc.) For at least several months?
For one, youd have to do a strict pre-surgical diet anyway. For two, wouldn't it be good to see how you could do with dietary changes before getting surgery?1 -
feel free to add me.
Unfortunately is surgery isn't magic and you must keep diet before and after. If your are interested, I know there are some 3-4 month class for life style change (I am not personalty involved in them, but know amazing pro who does) and few research showed that is helpful!!2 -
You still have to eat less.0

Have you ever watched the show" my 600 pound life". It is about weight loss surgery. Before any of these people can have the surgery, they have to lose at least 50 pounds - not because of the surgery, but so they can prove that they are willing to do what it takes to keep it off. He puts them on a 1000-1200 calorie diet. The show is interesting, because even after these people have the surgery, the ones that are successful continue to eat a very healthy, low calorie diet - a way of eating. I have a friend that had weight loss surgery - she now weighs over 300 pounds because she did not change her lifestyle and way of eating. So, unfortunately, the only way to get healthy is to eat a very healthy diet, move more --- all the things you can do without going through the weight loss surgery. You can do it --- you just have to WANT to do it.6

Weight loss surgery is most definitely not the answer. My 7 year oppiversary is Tuesday. First of all I paid 12k to have it done privately and it was botched. Ended up in intensive care for 3 weeks and it was nearly 6 months before I got back to work.
I've since had bowel obstructions, kidney stones, gall bladder issues, hair loss, malabsorbtion issues, anaemia.
I have developed reactive hypoglycaemia which has cost me my driving license and car. Killed my relationship because it makes you appear drunk and is likely to cost my job. I pass out, there are large parts of days I have no recollection of. My reactions are awful and even sweet corn can kick it off. I also have insulin response to sweeteners so having to eat fully keto and still flaking out.
Considering partial or full pancreatic removal with my endocrinologist because still having them despite meds..10 -
Weight loss surgery comes with risks, permanently alters your body and still takes committing to eating fewer calories over time. It is not the easier path IMO.
Personally I would just commit to using something like MFP for at least a year before going the surgery route. If you set your goal to lose 1-2 lbs a week and sustain that rate then you could be down 50-100 lbs in a year. That would be an improvement.
Start logging everything you consume as accurately as you can. Eat food you like. Learn appropriate portion sizes for you.
If you are an emotional eater work on developing different coping tools.
Whatever you do will take time and effort.2 -
I have my last dietitian appointment November 13 then i schedule my surgery. It's not a cure all. You have to eat right and exercise or you'll gain it all back.1

If you want to get surgery, and if you qualify, you can, but you need to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle in order to keep the weight off. If you don't change your habits, then any surgery is just going to be a temporary fix.1
