Is my goal unrealistic?

I currently have a goal to lose twenty pounds by New Years. Once I achieve that, I want to do a month of maintenance to try and maintain what I have done.
I'm not a fitness guru, in fact, I only consider myself proficiently sarcastic. Do you think this goal is reaching too high? It will ultimately put me at 40lbs down, and nearly half way to my goal... Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?

Depends on how overweight you are NOW. There are 9 weeks until NYE. So even at 2 lbs/week, you're looking at 18 pounds, unless you have a *significant* amount of weight to lose.0

You have 60 lbs to lose still? You might get 20 lbs in 10 weeks. Or you might lose 10 or 15. Can you live with that and keep working toward your goal if you don't hit 20?6

I'd shoot for 10 and anything over that would just be a happy bonus.9

What do you weigh now? If I'm mathing it right, that's almost 2 pounds a week, which is difficult to do and stay healthy unless you're really obese. I get wanting to have something to work for, but it might be worth setting a more modest goal and then if things are really rolling, being pleasantly surprised. Like a stretch goal! But I'm a big fan of the lowest possible amount of suffering while keeping things moving, and my goal for the end of 2017 only has me losing another 13 pounds max, so of course I think my way is best. At least you're not trying to lose 20 pounds by the end of the month or something totally bonkers.3

Thanks everyone. I am trying to keep it realistic. I do weigh 220 right now, and if I made it to that goal, I might hit Onederland by the new year.
But I do want to be realistic. Maybe halfing that goal would be better... but set it by Christmas or something?0 -

I'm about 225 and my goal is 9 pounds by NYE.

At 220 you've got a more solid shot at doing 2 pounds a week healthily, but it's still ambitious. 10 pounds by Christmas seems like a pretty achievable goal. Don't get too hung up on numbers, though (she says on a calorie counting website). If it takes you longer to get to 199 but you never reach 200 again, it'll be worth the extra time.5 -

Yes.
The reason that my goal is "low" is because there's Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween, and a bunch of food between me and NYE.7 -
Honestly. I'm not a fan of time limits or goals, especially difficult ones like this. Forward is forward no matter how slow and the only thing that matters is that you keep chipping away at it. You run the risk of losing heart if you "fail" at your goal but any degree of healthy weighrloss is always a win. Pay attention to nutrition and calories, find a form of exercise you enjoy and stick to and you will thank yourself for it in a year.1

Why not aim for 2 pounds per week and just see where that gets you? I'm not a fan of focusing on the end number too closely, because weight loss isn't linear and you can't guarantee that you'll hit a target right on time. You CAN guarantee that you'll put in the effort and do the best you can, though, so I'd focus on controlling what I'm able to control, and let the scale number be what it's going to be on NYE.0
