Sodium

By tracking my food I realize everything I eat is full of sodium. I love V8 and thought it was good for me then realized it is high high in sodium. This is going to be a struggle. I'm doing ok on calories, but some days seems I don't eat enough calories but if I add anything else, it would shoot me way over the sodium level.
Tracking is really an eyeopener

V8 is still good. Sodium (salt) is an electrolyte. All the vegetables in V8 contain a lot of potassium, also an electrolyte. You need a balance.

Unless you have health issues, salt isn't a huge worry.

I think the daily amount on here is low, to be honest. I get more than 3000 every day.

Tolerable upper levels of sodium consumption for women is around 2300mg.

Are you eating more than that?

Overall, you don't need to worry too much about sodium consumption unless you have a medical condition like hypertension. Regularly exceeding the recommended amount (1500mg) may result in some adverse health effects though.

For me (That AARP card offer pisses me off!), an aging inner and outer circle, just puts topics like sodium more on my mind. Friends and family are suffering from all sorts of ailments directly related to their dietary life style...their bodies no longer able to compensate. Even without a current personal health issue that requires sodium monitoring, I notice hands and feet swelling when I hit certain markers. Why wouldn't I want to be aware and prevent that discomfort? It is easy to see where it could one day lead...I want to be pro-active.

I am conscious of what I buy in a lot of ways...for my own reasons, but regarding sodium, I only buy low sodium versions of anything I can find. V8, yes, but also canned tomatoes used for cooking, soups and beef or chicken stock that I use for my own recipes. Same price...why not just do it.

Some people are more sensitive to sodium than others. I've been on blood pressure meds since the mid 1980s, and my hypertension appears to be almost entirely related to my current weight -- I've varied my sodium intake as an experiment, and it seems to have no effect on my blood pressure. I've lost 70+ lbs and my BP is running about 121/75 most days. I just had a small can of V8 with breakfast today - I tend to shop for things with lower sodium content, but I don't particularly worry about it (and I stopped tracking sodium on MFP). If I want a V8, I have a V8. If you find you're in the sodium sensitive club, you'll want to take a different approach.

I'm hypertensive so I have to watch my sodium. I drink low sodium V8 daily and when I'm using canned goods, I typically will look for lower sodium options. I eat a lot of whole foods.

That said, I'm pretty active, and I have to strike that balance between not enough sodium and too much...if I don't get enough and I'm sweating a lot, etc I'll get some really nasty cramping going on. Just remember that too little is just as bad, if not worse as too much...sodium is an essential electrolyte.
