So many foods have too many values to pick through, most of them cannot all be right. Any clues on managing this little glitch?

Compare what's listed to the nutritional information on the packaging or, for whole foods, to what is listed on the USDA database. Fellow users contribute to MFP's database and quite often create erroneous entries (either intentionally or not).

i typically search by USDA (insert food) - look for entries that have a wide variety of weights/measures associated

Agree with searching USDA + food. I had to be super vigilant at first to pick up accurate entries but once you're in a routine a lot of your foods will be populated on your recent or frequent list, so it won't be as arduous.

Thanks for the tips, especially USDA "food name" is a good tip. Thanks again. Looking forward to sharing more about my journey and perhaps hearing about yours.

If you use the mobile app ( phone or tablet ), you can scan the bar code for packaged items, to help sort thru the detritus. When in doubt about a couple similar entries, I always use the one with higher calories. Better to err on the side of over reporting than under reporting.

thanks for all the tips. I'm well on my way, since I posted this initial post. I'm still discovering cool things about the app, for example the import recipe feature. Super-cool. And to think I actually, painfully typed in recipes when I could have just typed in an URL. :-)
