I'd wipe it around with a paper towel. that's how I grease with butter.3

I heat it (or butter) just enough that I can soak some onto a paper towel, then wipe down the inside of whatever I want greased. It leaves me with a nice, even film coating every surface, but does not add more than necessary.0

I second the paper towel. The extra gets absorbed.0

Rub it between your fingers to melt it a little.0

I do the paper towel thing. And only a very thin layer. Just enough that you can barely see it.
Or get a coconut oil spray.0 -
Same way you did as a kid, helping to bake cookies ....
In my house, we used paper towels/napkins, or sometimes a sandwich bag ... in cold weather, heat from your finger tips helped to soften the Crisco to apply it easier.
You can always go back and wipe up any extra, if you think you've over applied.0 -
You can also melt it in the microwave and use a pastry brush.0

I use a piece of baking paper. Takes a mighty 1g of butter to grease a large dish.0

With butter I just keep the papers the butter comes in. So I'll second the suggestion for smearing a bit on baking paper!0

I use paper towel or plastic sandwich bags. Both work great!0
