Cheap Protein!

It's that time of year when turkeys are being offered for free or at a substantial discount w/certain purchases prior to TG but, if you live near a FoodMaxx, get over there to see if they are currently offering turkeys for just 29 cents/#.
That's what my local FoodMaxx is doing thru Nov 14th and I just bought a 20# turkey for only $5.80!
Can't get it any cheaper anywhere. In fact, I'm planning to buy 2 more b4 the sale ends.
I don't have the room in my freezer to store a whole turkey but the plan is to defrost them, break them down into their major parts and then repackage and refreeze them.
I'll also use the leftover bones, hearts, necks and giblets to make stock.
I may even grind up some of the breasts which at 29 cents/# beats the heck out of the nornal price of $4.50/# for ground turkey around here.
Just thought I'd mention it for those people who are looking for cheap protein.

And make sure to make turkey stock from those bones and scraps! You can use it just like chicken stock.0

Oops. . . had to delete a post intended for another thread.
And, yes, as mentioned, I am planning to use the leftovers to make stock.1 -
Just make sure you cook it before you freeze it again - never defrost and refreeze raw meat.1

So they say but I often do and have never had a problem because I re-freeze the meat immediately after defrosting and do not let it sit around.
BTW, much of the apparently fresh meat and poultry sold in stores is previously frozen and, after repackaging, I always refreeze it for use later.
I live alone and buy most of my meat in bulk to save $. Couldn't possibly eat all of the meat/poultry that I buy w/o doing so.
I also use a FoodSaver which removes almost all the air from the package which also reduces the likelihood of contamination and prolongs the useful life of frozen meat.
So, refreezing meat has not been a problem for me.2 -

You sure are ambitious. Thats a calorie out activity by itself!0 -
Now that I've had time to consider it, I'm going to smoke the turkey that I just bought and then segment, package and refreeze 2 others that I plan to buy later.
I had already cleaned and covered my grills for the season but I also want to smoke some bacon that I'm curing myself, so it would be better to do both on the same day.
GF will be around to help eat some of it. Can't wait. Yum!0 -
I was going to suggest smoking one! Also, if you freeze cooked turkey in turkey stock, it stays really moist after defrosting. Grill season is just kicking into gear, here.0

Holy TG!
Broke down and made stock out of two 20# turkeys and am just about done roasting the 3rd 20lb-der in the over after smoking it in the grill for an hr for flavor.
Not including the roasted bird, I've got now 25# of turkey parts and 2 gallons of turkey stock in the freezer.
Will have at least another 12. 5# of roasted turkey parts but am not going to make stock out of the extra bits . Will probably made some turkey congee of of that instead. And, will make a quart or so of gravy from the drippings.
And all of that just cost me a little under $18. Now, THAT is cheap protein.
Not going to need to buy any more turkey for quite awhile. LOL!1 -
