Hi: I Jim, I'm 67 married and have 2 adult children, 7 Grandchildren, and 3 Great Grandchildren. I'm diabetic and over weight. I need to have a AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurism) removed. I need to get my weight down to 200 pounds for the best possibilities. I currently weight 240 pounds and I'm 6 feet tall. Due to my AAA I can't go to the gym so I must do it my walking and by lowering my food intake. As a Diabetic your diet is already severely restricted (I take 4 Insulin Injections a day). I get frustrated easily, and lets be honest this isn't the best time of year to be trying to diet with the holidays just around the corner. I will try to stay positive, but there may be days I need to vent. My goal is to walk 10,000. steps per day for 1 month, then each month increase it by 5,000. steps till I reach 20,000. steps. Monday Morning I got see the surgeon and I know she is going to tell me it's great I've lost 25 pounds over the last couple of months but I'm a long ways from 200 pounds. Not looking forward to the appointment.

Who follows you for your diabetes? If you haven't yet, you should make an appointment with your endocrinologist and your dietitian for guidance. I'm sure both will be thrilled you have committed to losing weight, but because you are insulin dependent, you need to be careful, as I'm sure you are aware. In the meantime, if you would like to be mfp friends, I would be happy to be friends with you for mutual support and/or venting. I'm 57 with 2 adult children, no grandkids yet, although I'm looking forward to them in the not too distant future. My kids are 27 and 24. Not married and perfectly happy that way.0

You are doing great!!! Keep walking. I am also a diabetic, but I am not on any medications. I was just diagnosed in August. You are on the right track. Just keep walking and continue following your food plan. Every diabetic is different in what they can and can't do. I don't restrict any foods from my diet, I just make better choices. I have lowered my carb and sugar intake. When I first started out in June, I couldn't walk around the block hardly without my knees, ankles aching and my breath being non-existent. Now, I can walk 10+ miles a day (when the weather permits) without thinking about it. You can't rush the weight loss. Just one day at a time and you will get there.
Good luck on your doctor's appointment on Monday.

You don't need to go to the gym or exercise vigorously to lose weight. Just keep walking and staying within your calories, be patient, and the rest will come up. I'm 70 and went from 257 lbs to 185 lbs over a couple of years by staying in a calorie deficit without going to the gym.2
