I just found out I have high cholesterol. I know I need to cut out fat and exercise more. Any advice on what foods are good for lowering bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol???

Weight loss and exercise will have the greatest impact. Increasing fruits,/veggies (fibre), oats, legumes, and unsaturated fats (especially fish) can help.4 -
Go to nutritionfacts.org and use search function to find videos about the latest research on foods that lower cholesterol.1

Over all weight loss and activity are the best things for it.
Oats due to the beta glucan has been shown as beneficial as has fish oil, the likes of mackerel, salmon.1 -
In many, cutting refined carbs and sugars, or even carbs in general, will lower triglycerides, raise HDL, and improve the size and density of your LDL. Cholesterol is not a bad thing if you have the right types and ratios.
Cutting fats often does not help unless you are cutting trans fats and the unhealthy forms of polyunsaturated fats - vegetable oils like corn, soy, and even canola. Polyunsaturated fats high in omega 3s are thought to be healthful, such as those in fish and flax.
I recommend the books Cholesterol Clarity, The Great Cloesterol Myth, and Cholesterol Con. Dr Peter Attia also has an I depth series of blogs, heavy in science, on cholesterol.3 -
Here is an interesting n=1 experiment that shows how wrong previous thinking about cholesterol for most people may be.

Are you overweight?
Mine dropped from dangerously high to solidly normal just from going from obese to a healthy weight. I didn't make any special effort to eat less fat, other than what resulted from reducing calories. (Weight loss alone may be less effective if you have a genetic predisposition.)
I'd tried changing what I ate, with only minor improvement. I was very active athletically while obese, and still had high cholesterol. For me, weight loss was the answer . . . and it was simpler to accomplish than I ever dreamed. Wish I'd done it decades ago!
Best wishes for your own success!3
