I've agreed to take part in an organised, non competitive 5k run on Saturday with some o my friends. The problem is haven't ran before and all my friends run quite regularly. I think I'm going to be able to finish. When I agreed I didn't know how long is was and now I do I'm not sure if I should go anymore. It kind of still want to go because I do want to start exercising again and I want to see my friends but I feel like I'm just going to end up embarrassing myself.

Walk it. If you have never run before, then I would strongly advise not starting by trying to run a 5k. You don't have enough time to train to run it. There are walkers in every 5k I've ever run, so you won't be the only person walking.5

I did my first 5k un-trained and over 300 lb. I didn't finish last. If you are smart enough to slow to a walk whenever your breathing is difficult, you'll be ok. Just don't try to keep up with your well-conditioned friends.5

A few years ago, coming off an injury that kept me from running, I walked a 5k in about 39 minutes, it was an out and back course, and on the way back I was passing folks who didn't manage their pace effectively and burned out on the front half.
SO yeah, manage your pace and you'll do fine.1 -

Plan on walking it...
I did my first 5K untrained and I slowly jogged about 1 mile and walked the rest. I was pretty out of shape and sore as AF the next day.0 -
I would walk run. So wear a watch run 30 sec or1 min walk 4 min repeat.1
-
walk or run slow - you could do some intervals (run 1 min, walk 2 etc) - but go out and have fun that is important too1
-
Don't stress this. It should be about having fun and showing your support. Jog when you can and walk most of it if you have to. You'll feel so good when you finish. I've only done 2 5K's so far and as another poster said, there are always walkers. You won't finish last, don't worry.0

Oh you'll be fine. Agree with the person that said "Don't try to keep up with your friends"! Do your own thing...run until winded, walk until you catch your breath!! No need to back out!!! Just go and have fun!! The best parts of group runs like this is the fun before and after your run. You'll have people at the finish line to cheer you on, enjoy that moment!!0

A lot of people walk 5ks, some pushing strollers or walking their dogs. Most 5ks are intended for fun as much as fitness. So go and enjoy the day. Don't try to run the whole thing. If you want, you can try jogging a bit, then walking until you catch your breath, then jogging a bit. Or just plan to walk as quickly as you can. You won't be alone.1

Can you walk it? I am doing a Turkey Trot 5k on Thanksgiving. I am having some health things right now so running isn't a good option - totally going to walk and have fun!0

Thanks for the support guys. I told my friends that id probably walk most of the way and they said at least one of them would walk with me because they thought me walking by myself would be a bit peak (I said I wouldn't have minded).
But now it looks like we're all going out Friday night so I don't think we're gonna make the park run after all!
There's always next week though!0 -
If it's a Parkrun then go anyway, even if you're hanging.
We have a number of walkers at mine, and you wouldn't be last as that's the tailrunners job.1 -

you know one of the best things to clear a hangover is getting out and doing exercise?
Works for me every time....

The only part you should run in the last 100 yards.3

I walked my first 5k at 300 lbs also. I finished last out of a field of 1400. I felt horrified when I realized I was the last person @1 mile in, but I got used to the idea and survived, lol. 2 friends walked with me and just encouraged me along. The rest of my friends were there at the finish line cheering me on. I've done that race 3 more years since and ran all of it the last 2 years. If your friends are going to humiliate you, find some new friends, but don't stop walking!0

Just run a bit, walk a bit, and enjoy the event.0

Loads of people walk ParkRun, they also have a tail walker/runner so you'll never be left behind, so even walking it you wont be last.0

This is surprisingly true. Maybe not for a hardcore hangover that involves nausea and blinding headaches but if you have one of those light hangovers that just leave you feeling gross and tired, doing some sort of moderate cardio really helps to get you back in shape. The hardest part is making yourself get up and out.0 -

I always thought people who said this were lying to make the rest of us feel bad and justify their own masochism, but it turns out it's true. The first time I went jogging after a night out was a revelation.0 -

I thought people used exercise as an excuse
to avoid embarrassment about whatever happened the night before!1
