Mid 60’s guy trying to overcome lifelong eating problem; too much food and more junk than my meds can overcome. Approaching retirement and now with grandkids, and with diabetes and bypass history, life expectancy is a real concern. I realize it’s a lifestyle rather than a diet. I’m hoping tracking will help me stay focused and conquer one day at a time. Any experiences or suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Good luck! My husband and I just finished a 21 day cleanse with Omnitrition, down 30 & 20lbs, and are using MyFitnessPal as we head into a maintenance mode so we don't slip, and hopefully continue to lose a pound a week with healthy lifestyle choices. I love the calorie tracker - be honest with it, and remember that one slip doesn't mean failure, it means try again the next day!

YES! Tracking is the difference between progress and staying the same. At least it was for me. All the times I tried to just "eat healthier" or "eliminate carbs" didn't result in any weight loss. I plugged my height, weight, age (I am 57) and weight loss goals into MFP and just started logging what I ate into the program. It requires discipline, so just don't give up even if you go over your calorie goals one day. My hints: (1) drink water; sometimes you'll think you're hungry but you're just dehydrated; (2) buy a kitchen scale and weigh your food for more accurate calorie readings; (3) if you're sedentary, add a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood to your day. And (4) don't freak out if your weight loss stalls or you've gained a pound or two. Your weight will naturally fluctuate depending on how much salt you ate the night before, whether you've emptied your bowels completely, etc. I started looking forward to jumping onto my bathroom scale to see how I was doing! Every tenth of a pound loss was a celebration. Anyway, I lost 30 pounds and reached my goal in about 5 months using MFP tracking. I'm proud of myself and my doctor is impressed.
