Hard to breathe when run/exercise... asthma?

I have never had a problem like this before. It started this year in early spring when I tried to jog outside. I wasn't just out of breath, because I know that feeling. The air wasn't getting to my lungs, like my throat was closing up. I thought it was because of the cold weather, so I ignored it and stopped running.
Now it's warmer, but I'm still having the same problem. When I try to push myself while biking, I start to weeze and gasp for air.
I started interval running yesterday. Run for a minute, walk for two. I could barely make it the full 60 seconds without breathing getting too difficult. But my body didn't hurt and I wanted to keep going.
I gained 20 pounds since last year, could this be the cause? If I keep exercising will it eventually go away? I'm scared I might have mild exercise induced asthma.
