So I’m in need of some motivational help! I’m currently working on my NICU rotation and there are so many snacks! I’ve already been bad and had one big cookie, but I have a huge weakness for sweet things. How do you guys resist temptation for the things you like the most? Any suggestions are welcomed :)

  • Replace it with something or log it in advance if you know you will eat it so it will fit into your calories. A cookie in itself isn't that bad. Maybe try replacing it with some dark chocolate (good for you) or a fruit.

My problem is cola, so I replace it with water, coffee or tea.

If you mostly eat healthy food, and crave something, as you call it, "bad", that's not so terrible. But living off a diet of vending machine foods is BAD.

You've been bad if you hit someone or ate someone else's food. Eating food you like, doesn't make you bad, that's silly. If you like sweet foods and they are freely available, you can most likely make room for some in your calorie budget. If you don't want to eat the cookies, you have to decide in advance that you're not going to.

I have a huge sweet tooth too! I keep several flavors of gum on hand and it helps with the sweet craving. I also go for a walk away from the sweets and give myself a pep talk. You’ll feel proud of yourself.

Take healthy snacks with you to work. I always have some raw almonds, string cheese and salami close at hand. I eat those if the immediate craving doesn't go away.

I know the struggle, though. I travel and work between several different offices. It's a rare day that I don't have to pass on cake or donuts.

I look at the food and imagine that someone spit or vomited on it. Kind of extreme but it works for me.

Peanut butter does wonders to stop sweet craving, because of all the fat and the "damp" taste. Also, pure black coffee, keeping yourself hydrated and of course having a strong mindset. Fibers and fat help a lot in general to keep sweet cravings off.

Don't fall for small excuses like the lady above who keeps gum of different tastes with her... If you're truly committed to your goals you shall never indulge in excuses.
