Let it GO! Decluttering (simplifying) your life of (people, places or things) success stories?

My partner has started doing MFP with me. I started 2 months ago, and he started 2-3 weeks ago. I mentioned this thread to him and suggested we could work towards this eventually, once he's settled in with his eating and exercise. He agreed. But tonight, he's just started clearing out our youngest two children's wardrobe.
We love decluttering but have been slack in the past few years, and it's time again. Thanks for the great thread to remind us
Candy, how utterly bombdotcom are you and your partner? That's absolutely tremendous and THANK YOU so much for contributing to this thread--y'all rock, period.2 -
Wanted to share something quick:
Here's some experienced "tips" that help me tremendously in all that we've been sharing:
If you take it out...put it back as soon as you're done, NO exceptions.
Do it yourself...stop depending on others in your household to do what YOU should/need to be doing, no exceptions. (Think NEAT exercises).
Don't you DARE walk past that dirt on the floor, that old newspaper, anything you see that needs to be picked up and thrown away or swept, DO IT YOURSELF, stop waiting for someone else to do it.
Dishes in the sink are forbidden, if the dish washer is loaded, wash it out and dry it off old school, believe me, after a month or so of no longer allowing dirty dishes in the sink, you'll become a master of the clean kitchen. Not having dishes in the sink AND sweeping regularly and keeping the counters and stove clean does something POWERFUL in you...it really does.
Washing clothes? Just don't fold them up and leave them, put them away IMMEDIATELY, as soon as they are done. This helps keep your closets and drawers neat and clean too. Don't wait until "tomorrow" to iron the clean clothes. Dedicate an hour or so to ironing your clean clothes and hang them up immediately--serious self-control/discipline this WILL create in you, for realz!
Don't you DARE entertain the idea that "poor me, nobody's helping" MESS...NAW, do it yourself and by yourself if necessary and do it with a super GOOD attitude too. REFUSE to look at cleaning/maintaining your home as "I "got" to do this or that...MAKE yourself look at it as I "get" to do this or that instead. Counting your blessings as you work. Honey, 10 million people would trade places with you, 100,000,000 OR MORE peoples all over this world would take y/our problems and woes in a heartbeat and count them as a sheer unadulterated blessing--start today, understanding that no matter how "hard" it is, it could be a million times worse--MAKE yourself see the "glass half full, instead of half empty"--MAKE yourself count all the yuck as joy, because you aint dead yet, and it aint over until you're dead--everyday is a new start, it really is--even if it's a new start in your attitude and the way you perceive things. Keep your heart, mind, home and appearance up with sheer JOY, cause you "get to" and can, period.

Decluttering is good for the bank balance.
Having done so much work clearing so much space, I’m now very prudent about wanting to buy any products that will use up even a tiny amount of space.
Having a “capsule wardrobe” of only good quality clothes that fit and match means I’m very reluctant to add anything to my cupboards. A garment has to fill a lot of criteria and has to have space to be stored.
I see shop windows filled with colourful plastic crap and it doesn’t make me want to buy the latest household gadgets or gimmicky fad. (Have you seen all the plastic unicorn crap?!)
When I was decluttering, I had to throw out a huge basket of my son’s old assorted plastic Kinder Surprise pieces. They’re too small to be recycled here. I feel bad about that all going into landfill. Now I see most things in the shops as just soon-to-be landfill.
This all means I don’t spend as much as I used to. It's a really good feeling being in control of one's spending. No more impulse buying!
I had to empty out a good portion of my parents house with my brother in 2015. It really showed me how many knick-knacks and useless things we bought for them just to say we got them something. It was a terrible feeling. The next year we downsized from a 1200 sq foot 3 bdrm townhouse + finished basement to a 720 sq foot 2 bedroom mobile home. Let me tell you, it was heartbreaking getting rid of so many items that I "thought" were treasured. When I really had to think about what meant the most to me all of the Partylite, Princess House, "name the direct marketing item" really meant nothing to me. I probably sold 10K worth of stuff for about 500. I seriously consider what I am buying now and am very careful with my choices. I buy most of my books from a local second hand store that sells them for 25 cents per inch. I then read them and donate them back except for a couple authors that I will reread over and over.
I am slowly losing weight and having to replace clothes. I keep a large shopping bag on my closet floor, as something no longer fits or I decide I don't like I throw it in the bag. As soon as the bag is gone it goes to the second hand store.
I have also thought about my gift giving and buy more meaningful things for my family. It was really a life lesson.12 -
I finished the second cupboard today. Now there's a place for all the garden stuff that's been on top of the dishwasher! Another flat surface becomes visible!
I've come to the conclusion that the other 2 are up to hubby, for now. I'm afraid I'll throw out something he uses.9 -
LET GO of worrying/fretting/arguing/fussing/murmuring/complaining (about everything and about "stuff" and STOP it (worrying/fussing/about with others and especially with yourself)...LET IT GO, because we CAN...we really and truly can let go of the "mess & clutter" of worrying and strife/stress--it's a choice--CHOOSE stress-free thinking/living/being (minute by minute, day by day forevermore--practice makes better) .7

"Do it yourself" has been reverberating through my head all day. I have been happily picking things up, sweeping, etc. Thanks for the attitude adjustment!
I did decide to leave those 2 cupboards, but only because I'm in a "everything goes" frame of mind.7 -

So much this. I now try really hard to buy gifts for my friends and family that are either consumable or an experience. I will buy a gift card to a nice restaurant, a certificate for a mani/pedi, or something that I know will be used but that comes with a gift receipt.
For their birthdays, I took my sister and brother-in-law to a screening of Lost Boys last year at a local movie house that serves beer and dinner, and it was awesome! We forgot how hilariously bad that movie was, and had a great time.
Experiences over things, right? That's the direction I am trying to head.13 -

Hey gang!
We're LETTING GO of sooooo much "stuff", "stuff" that has been mastering/controlling/dominating and causing us (some of us) an entire lifetime of misery, woe and all kinds of serious mental/physical/emotional/social/spiritual/financial DIS-EASE and MESS and harm. Today, I want to add one more LET IT GO to our list. This one "may" appear minor or not so essential, but it super is. Here it goes:
The BLASTED scale and depending on it and what it SAYS (sometimes multiple times per day). LET THIS "tool" GO as your "main" motivation or y/our "means" for happiness and contentment. The scale as a tool is/can be good....as a MASTER and BOSS of you and me--it's a recipe for all kinds of YUCK. Let me give you a personal example:
I'm still at 163.4lbs (56.4lbs down from almost 220lbs as my highest weight ever). The scale hasn't MOVED down in almost 2+ weeks, BUT... L@@K at my inches loss in 2+ weeks:
Neck: .5 inches down
Arms .5 inches down
Waist: 2 inches down
Chest: 1.5 inches down
Butt: 2 inches down
Uhhhhhhh......W W Thank you JESUS, that's 6.5 big ole ugly inches forever gone to the place where the sun aint ever gonna shine off of my body and it's super visible and feel sooooooo GOOD!
SLAVERY is terrible and slavery to the scale is something we need to HATE and FORSAKE at all costs, period. Got a challenge for us (me included) I double dog DARE us to only get on the scale once per week--just because we can, we're tough minded like that, we super ARE! I use the "excuse" of weighing daily to measure what I'm eating, if it's good or not--B.S. (being silly, of course). I aint got no more time for being "silly" or obsessive/impulsive/whack about anything anymore, especially this dog-gone scale. Let's LET IT GO, depending on what the scale tells us daily and look to how we're looking, measurements and just plain humbling ourselves and embracing the process, the good, the bad and the ugly of it all with JOY. This is NOT a race, we're NOT dieting, this is a lifestyle change and everything that involves it. Lastly, my motto is "TAKE Y/OUR TIME and do it right AND righteously " Hurry/obsession/compulsion/fear/worry/anxiety and impulsiveness (and all the other YUCK associated with these types of "things/feelings" is of the AND counter-productive AND unnecessary and a THIEF of our inner peace and joy...FOR REAL!3 -

I've been in a funk this week, our dog died Monday and he wasn't doing well all weekend. Today was the day to make myself do something besides what I have to. I washed the outside of the dryer (it looked horrible next to the new washer). Not much, but I feel better.20

I'm so sorry @snoo61 - losing a pet is so hard, no matter how it happens. Certainly do what you need to feel like you accomplished something, but also know that it's okay not to accomplish anything for a while. It's okay to grieve, be sad, cry. Be kind to yourself.3 -

{{{{{{{{{ HUGS }}}}}}}}}}}} I'm so so so sorry to hear about your dog Snoo I never really realized the real love and closeness animals/pets/fur-babies can bring in/to a person/a family's life. I adopted a kitten several months ago, after living almost my entire life without living with an animal/fur baby and being a pet mom and even though it's only just been several months since having this darling kitty fur baby in my life and home, wow...I REALLY love and care for our cat so very much already. I totally get it, about being in a "funk" and grieving the loss of your dog/family member actually. For you to step outta yourself and make yourself do something (besides what you have to do) is more than admirable to me...it's powerful (full of power) to know that even though you are experiencing some real loss, pain and even shock/stress/trouble, your choosing to make yourself do something you simply and rightfully so didn't "feel" like/have to be doing is again, something that "sparks" something in me that is causing/inspiring me to LET GO of some things that have been "bothering me" and tempting me to open the door to being in a "funk" of sorts this week/last week too. THANK YOU SNOO for taking the time, care and power to post/share with us what's going on in your precious life--you're helping more people than you can ever imagine by posting/sharing this with us--THANK YOU again, and please know you'll be in my thoughts

59 lbs
LOST
This is what my badge shows after updating my weight ( one week ONLY weighing). Actually, it's 58.6lbs down (from my highest 219.8) I love that my badge shows 59lbs (even though it technically is not--my update shows:
lost 2.2 lbs since last weighing in! Newlifestyle4me's lost 58.6 lbs so far.
Utterly amazing, so so GLAD to see that LET IT GO, is the absolute right and righteous way to think and live. Just about 1 week ago, I posted about the YUCK of being "obsessed and dominated" by the scale and NOT seeing ANY movement DOWN for a couple/few weeks of getting on the scale multiple times per day, yadayadayada/etc. I REFUSED to get on that scale after my post for one week only (my weigh-in day/Friday's) and BOOM! Not only movement, but HUGE 2.2lbs down this week. Is it water? fat? blood? whatevah, it's down and I LOVE that my badge says 59lbs down. I've NEVER been this far down in all of my obese/overweight/heading towards normal BMI @ my goal is 154lbs (from there, I'll make a new goal of 140-145lbs or so), so I'm merely just 7 more pounds away.....from goal 154lbs---WOW and BOOM!
I'M CLOSE TO BEING IN THE 150'S BABY (today I'm 161.2lbs), BOOM, WOW AND OH YEAH, OOOOOH YEAH-- THE ONE FIFTY'S is near and dear--YAY!
Letting GO of things hindering/bothering/stagnating/depressing/holding us back/going along to get along, etc. REFUSING to be a "slave" to anything (including the scale) is EVERYTHANG, just EVERYTHANG...--Big ole Boom in just LET IT GO!11 -

How fabulous. I made spaghetti the other day and the kids brought home a couple of jars of sauce. One of the jars was ragu. I NEVER EVER use Ragu sauce, ever and guess what? It was some of the BEST spaghetti I ever made. Just goes to show ya, NEVER say NEVER and take y/ourself outta the "box" of never and watch what GREAT things/changes can happen!
I can only imagine how fabulous your homemade sauce is going to be. YAY you Snoo!!!!2 -

This is what I'm thinking about...pertaining to LET IT GO and a more simplified (and real/true peace & joy inducement) in ALL areas of my life (weight-loss, mental/spiritual/physical/financial/emotional, etc.). Here it is:
DON'T LOOK BACK, period. DON'T "allow" my mind to wander and living in the past AND DON'T allow myself/my mind to emphasize nor focus on the future and what "might/could/should happen tomorrow. Just focus on right NOW-TODAY only. Let NOW-TODAY be my main "determination and attention" if you will. I started thinking about how my "looking back" is a huge influence in so much negativity, poor choices and more important distraction from my TODAY goal(s). Then I started thinking about running (of all things...cause I don't run--I walk and purposely walk slowly and strolling of sorts, if you will) and even as I'm doing walking and after dinner "constitution"...what would happen to me if I started walking or running looking back/backwards? I'll tell ya, UH-OH, here comes a fall or an accident of some sort OR at the very least, looking back/backwards while I:m walking, running, driving or anything is opening up the door to a big ole NASTY accident/fall. I started thinking about how looking back on my past and doing too much "reminiscing" is just NOT GOOD to/for me...it super is NOT GOOD. It "seems" like it's nice, fun, good--but it's NOT. Like my daddy used to say "everything that looks good, feels good, tastes good and/or sounds good AINT GOOD"!
Imagine driving, just looking in your rear view mirror the majority of your time driving...can someone say CRASH and YIKES!!!
Then I started thinking about my "future"...it's exactly like thinking too much about my past--it actually encourages all kinds of yuck, like fear, covetousness, impatience, compulsions, comparing myself & my situation(s) with others and a LOT more yuck. Looking to the future inspires in/thru me a sense of dread and kindles discouragement and again a lot more "stuff/mess" I don't want or need in my heart, mind and life. Focusing on the future is just as much of a distraction to achieving my goals as indulging the past does. I've ALWAYS thought/considered dwelling on the past or "planning" for the future was/is a "good" thing. In the business of LET IT GO, it's so NOT. LET IT GO and DON'T LOOK BACK are best friends, period.
So, what then? Focus on RIGHT NOW/today. Tomorrow will bring it's own troubles and wins...TODAY/NOW is so utterly embodied in LET IT GO, I love the freedom of NOW/TODAY. There is so much hope and peace in focusing on NOW/TODAY instead of yesterday and tomorrow.
Hahaha...I just looked at the word NOW and I saw it backwards---WON! I love it!!!!6 -
Spent a couple of years trying different things.
It's important to know that somethings will work, some things won't. Some things you just need tweaks, some things you need better systems for them to work. Often people who go on declutter kicks think it's a one and done. But you have to put a working system in place so that it essentially stays the way you put it.
Things that get the most use are going to get messed up faster, so you need good systems to go with it. Having a shoe organizer by the door is a great idea, but if you haven't trained your family to put their shoes in it, it's pretty useless.
That being said, over the years, some things have really worked well. To not make this too long, here are two "game changers:"
1) Having labeled bins in the cupboards, fridge and freezer. This sounds really type A, BUT, this makes putting groceries away SO SO quick, everyone knows where everything is, and it's easy to see what is needed when it's grocery time. Add a spot for things you make often - like a sandwich bin (for meats and cheeses, condiments) - coffee/tea bar, etc., and making your stuff is as easy as pulling out a single bin. You can do a quick declutter and wipe every time you put away groceries to keep this system up. Plus, put things where it makes sense. Spices by the stove, coffee bar near the coffee pot, etc.
2) People think I spend a ton of time getting ready. NOT! It takes me very, very little time, and is so easy because of a system I put in place. Recently I forgot I had an appointment scheduled for an hour from when I remembered. But I had to go to another town to be ready for that appointment. Because my outfit was together, I took a quick shower, got dressed, drove to one town, then to the next and was 15 minutes EARLY to my appointment. I later was complimented by 3 people on my outfit I took literally no time to choose that day.
How?
I purchased my clothes with purpose. Instead of going out and buying something because it's "cute," or on sale, I buy with a list, like I would groceries. So many times we have cute tops or bottoms that don't go with anything, or have an unflattering fit, and they just sit in your closet and make it frustrating to figure out what you will wear. So, clear your clothes of things that don't fit or you don't like, then get a base wardrobe of basics - jeans, pants, t-shirts, blouses, skirts, tennis shoes, heels in the basic colors (black, navy, white). Other basic colors, depending on your style, would be beige, blush pink, army green, camel, etc. Whatever you get after that, that's "just so cute," provided it is following the style of clothes you wear, it will pair well with one of the basic items you have in your closet.
Then make outfits - have one or two major, hours long trying on the clothes you have in your closet. Since I don't trust myself to do the "choose your clothes the night before," I choose many outfits, and that is how they hang in my closet. Either put them together on hangers in your closet, or/ and in addition to, when you wear the outfit, take a selfie. The selfies serve as a reminder to you what outfits, shoes and accessories you wore, and what looks good on you. You won't have to stand in front of the closet trying to figure things out or try things on. Either you just grab a complete outfit from the hanger, or look at your phone to see what you feel like wearing that day.
If nothing else, get some flattering dresses. Then you just put one on and look put together. It's the easiest outfit hack ever.
First, it takes a lot of effort up front. Going shopping and buying what fits, is cute, or on sale, is a lot easier to do than going shopping for "the black jeans that really flatter me," or a "white short sleeved blouse that falls over the hip."
But imagine what it would be like to have a month of wearing clothes you look fabulous in, and not spending any time figuring out outfits, no piles of clothes on the floor from trying things on, no getting late because you couldn't figure out what to wear, no feeling like you are wearing clothes that are unflattering. NO STRESS OVER YOUR CLOTHES.
I got a bunch of these tips off of youtube, from a professional stylist (whose style I don't like, but her ideas about clothes are fantastic): https://www.youtube.com/user/StylistLaurenMessiah
And a vlogger, whose style I do like:

Children’s clothing has been a burden on me since my first was a year old. I have never been able to get a hold on how much we need, or say no to generous clothing donors. We save handmedowns for the next kid and we make dirty farmy messes too so I always think we need play clothes. I have had mental breakdowns ever the amount of clothes and laundry we’ve had for 10 years. No more!!!! Today and this weekend my children and I declutterec 8 CONTRACTOR bags of kids clothes! Now they are left w just 2 dresser drawers. I’ve seen the light!10

I have been decluttering. First I attacked the pantry. Outdated food, stuff that we will never eat, stuff that just isn't healthy when out.
Then I attacked the refrigerator - threw out all that stuff hiding in the back, got rid of all those one use condiments, and other things that were cluttering up my refrigerator.
I attacked the freezer - stuff that had been in there way too long, stuff that we would not eat and no longer fits with our lifestyle change. You would not believe how much food I threw out, and how much space I reclaimed. Do you know how much money I threw away???
And my wardrobe. Like most women I have been hanging onto clothes waiting for a miracle. There are also clothes that I bought and didn't like or wear after I got them. Gathered them all up for good will - then my cleaning lady asked me if I would mind if she took them - and the friends she gave them to are both grateful and happy to have some new clothes to wear (because I have enough that they are barely worn).
Shoes that I don't wear that are still in very good condition. Make peace with the fact that I can no longer wear 3 1/2 inch heels. Purses that I've had that are too good to throw out, but good enough to collect dust in my closet - gone. Scarves too. Costume jewelry that I forgot about or was just clogging up my jewelry box and keeping me from finding what I wanted. Cosmetics, hair supplies, etc. All those samples that I will never use. Gone!
Magazines and books that I was keeping for who knows why? Cookbooks? Two shelves worth, beccause anything I need is on the internet.
Next I will start on collectibles. And tubs of cooking things that are over in our loft and I never use. And craft supplies and art supplies.
It makes me feel so good to rid myself of these things and since a lot of things are going to other people to enjoy, that makes me happy.
I have stopped buying. I have no one to leave it to and the few young people I know won't want it either.
