Body weight exercises on a bed?

I am new to strength training (fitness in general). I checked out a book from the library titled "Strength Basics". It has a section that recommends body weight ST for those just beginning or without a lot of equipment. I believe I can do almost all of the exercises recommended in that chapter. The issue is, I have a hard time getting up and down off the floor because of bad knees and my current weight. The book recommends you do the exercises in a circuit, which has you getting up and down off the floor quite a bit. My question is, can the supine exercises be done on a firm bed, or would it be better to do the exercises with all of the reps I need for the floor done one after the other with a brief rest period then get up off the floor and do the remaining standing one?

I also have two pound weights that I will use to do some of the other free weight exercises with once I have the first group down pat.

Thanks everyone!

I have done push-ups, crunches (lots of variations to engage obliques and/or upper and lower abs), leg lifts, etc. in the bed. After a car accident messed up my back and then a motorcycle accident messed up my knee, I needed the softer support of the bed for transitions. If it burns, you're doing it right. :)

Thanks so much for the information. Glad to know I can start off where I'm comfortable and focus on the exercises and not my anxiety about how badly it's going to hurt putting pressure on my knee!
