    Hmm..so I did 2:45 on Sunday....think I posted that

    I did 1:10 ish yesterday

    And 2:01 total today

So I am at 26 hours and 28 minutes according to Strava. Finally starting to feel fit again. Got 2 major centuries in 2 weeks...coming up soon. Both are personal time trails for me. Do them every year. The big one is 107 miles with 3500 meters of climbing....11,000 feet. The goal is 17mph. The second is 101 with 7500 feet of climbing. The goal is 19.5. That one hurts...a lot. Both solo. I do not like drafting.

To bed I go...to ride another day. Dedication or crazy are similar concepts. But when I am old I do not think I will regret these challenges.

One of the somewhat interesting features on my Garmin Edge 1000 is that it gives you a hint on recovery time after your workout - normally for me 24 to 48 hours depending on intensity and training volume.

Last night it came up with 3.5 days!
Starting to ramp up my winter strength program but shouldn't hit training and recovery conflicts for quite a while yet.

262 miles done so far this month, 166 to goal.
On course but would be nice to get a break in the weather and be able to knock a decent chunk off that.

I turned off the recovery feature, it seemed silly to me, but never bothered to research how they figured out the recovery time

It does seem quite random so I treat it with detached amusement, would be interested what parameters they use just out of nerdy curiosity. Often despite riding when I "should" be recovering the message 'recovery good' comes up after a few minutes anyway. I just go by good old fashioned feel (first hill generally tells me all I need to know) and the degree of soreness from my extensive collection of old injuries.

I used my HR at 150 watts and 200 watts to know where I am at...obviously RPE matters to but 130BPM at 200 watts is a good day for me. But this only works inside, outside it takes longer for me to know, 30 minutes sometimes

Lots more indoor cycling as weather has been too cold for me.
Hoping for a weather break next week as would be great to get some outdoor miles in.
Highlight this week was setting a new PR for a 20 minute test at 220w. Very pleased with that.

    MTD - 17 Hours 335 miles 3 Personal Records 25 Activities

    YTD - 297 Hours 4,907 miles 716 Personal Records 279 Activities

93 miles to hit goal and feels like I'm on the home stretch now.

    2:01 yesterday and 4:26 today.

    So 38:43 for the month.

Held 232 watts for 4 hours at 60 kilograms. That good if you understand wattage in cycling

Toyed with the idea as there's a strange masochistic appeal to doing a hateful indoor century but one of my cycling goals this year was to do less "junk miles" and more enjoyable miles.

Although I can't say I enjoy indoor training I'm tolerating it and getting satisfaction from how it's clearly helping my cycling and fitness: cadence better, pedalling efficiency improved, set a new PB for indoor 40km as well as the 20 min FTP test. Next goal is a one hour max effort, I suspect the 220w x 95% FTP estimate (209w) may be beyond me as my performance drops badly as I overheat and my HR soars.
But I won't know until I try.

Indoor training, for me, takes me to a whole new level, it takes 30-40% more riding for me outside to get same effect, Tempo and above inside only. Zone 2 just does not do it unless you are new. If you bumped up all you rides I would bet you would hit all goals. I have been training with power for 11 years...lots of data....from me and the people I coached.

I see zone 2 as ok (just ok, I rarely ride it) inside as filler between the hard day. I do two zone 1 days (recovery rides), plus two zone 4 plus days (painful), one 3+ hour day, one tempo to threshold day. Over and over again. I will drop the second hard every now and then to allow for more recovery.

Also if under 8 hours a week no recovery days are needed. I aim for 13-15 so some has to be easy.

Thanks for the well meaning advice John but no thanks.

If I bumped up all my rides I would knacker my damaged knees in a very short time (missing cruciate ligament, only 10% of one meniscus etc. etc.) and never recover. My recovery days are very much needed and they are also my weight lifting days, cycling is just one of my activities. One of the things I've learned and reluctantly had to acknowledge is that in your 50's injury recovery and overuse recovery takes far longer, you lose fitness and strength fast and getting it back takes forever.

I'm cycling as much I want to do and longer would be more than my knees will tolerate, I ration my long distance events partly for that reason. I'm already 7 years past predicted date for a total knee replacement so I've found my balance between what I want to do, what I enjoy, the satisfaction of improving and what I can physically do.

Gotch, yeah that danger of internet advice, you never know enough about a person. With time and perspective things become far more clear. Thanks to sharing. My knowledge sometimes exceeds my ability to be curious first.

    Enjoy the day...

Wanted to finish off my cycling mileage challenge with a flourish..... 5,008 miles this year and the final ones were really hard ones.

Did a one hour FTP test (maximal effort) and set a new PR @ 213 watts. Delighted with that as previous best was 202 watts so that's a decent improvement for an old fart. Indoor training is hard and dull but very effective, PRs for 20 mins, 60 mins and 40km this month.

    YTD - 302 Hours 5,008.8 miles 716 Personal Records 286 Activities

Hi everyone! I'm new here (in this thread), but I want to post my goal for myself. It's in my head, but I feel that if I put it here and tell people around me that makes it more real, and I have people to hold me to that goal! I just have an exercise bike at home, but I'd like to get a bike to take around and ride when it's nice outside as well. This is not a new year's resolution. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time and I want to start now. I'm starting out small, but this is just to get me started. I want to do at least 20 minutes a day 3 times a week. Typically when I ride now I ride longer than 20 minutes, but just to get going with a goal I'm setting it at that.
Good luck to everyone else who has set a goal for themselves!

Welcome here ... and start logging! :)

If you know how many minutes (or a distance) you've ridden on the past few days, or for anytime in the month of December, log it all here!!

There will, no doubt, be another thread started for January, and another for February, and so on.

December has been a bit of a wash-out for me, for various reasons, but this is my month:

    Mon 04 - 24.09 miles
    Wed 06 - 24.05 miles
    Thu 07 - 24.05 miles
    Fri 08 - 24.03 miles
    Sat 09 - 5.5 miles
    Wed 27 - 5.93 miles: MTD 107.65 / 166.6, YTD 4211.36 / 4000

Satisfied with the year overall, but disappointed with the way it finished.

Onwards and upwards for next year!

Last ride of the month and the year.
Was chatting with a fellow old fart early in the month as we were warming up on our Wattbikes about how dull indoor riding is compared to the real thing and he used the slightly cringe-making phrase "boring yes, but there's gainz to be made".
He was right as I've seen good improvements is pedalling efficiency and fitness, today's zone 3 ride had me about 20 watts higher and felt really easy. So easy I followed it up with a 3 minute MMP test. An hour is a bit excessive for a warm up!

    MTD - 24 Hours 483 miles 3 Personal Records 35 Activities

    YTD - 304 Hours 5,055 miles 716 Personal Records 289 Activities

Unexpectedly, got an extra ride in, #349 for the year. Car is off the road, so did in-laws shopping on 2 wheels instead of 4.

    Sat 30 - 12.56 miles: MTD 120.21 / 166.6, YTD 4223.92 / 4000

That really is it for the year now - best wishes to all and a happy new year (shortly)

Oh excellent. My goal is just to finish. I know I can do all the distances, just not in 8 and a half hours! I'm looking to summer 2019, IMOO 70.3. Lots and lots of hills on the bike course though, so I'm planning lots and lots of hill work this summer :)

I did Madison 70.3 this year as one of my training events for the Wisconsin Ironman. It’s a technical bike course with lots of hills and turns. The roads are not the best either. This year it did get really hot on run. Not much shade at all running around the lake. The swim was great though. Probably the best swim I had all year.
Steelhead is another great 70.3. Superior man in Duluth is a must as well.
