Pain going from plank to down dog--is this my IT band?

So when I'm doing yoga and trying to go smoothly from plank pose to downward facing dog, I am stopped in my tracks by a painful twinge down the back of one leg or the other. This also happens in other exercises when I'm getting in and out of plank position--like burpees. Is this my IT band being tight? If so, is there anything I can do about it other than IT band stretches?

I'd recommend seeing a doctor for any persistent pain that you can't explain. Your IT band is on the outer side of your thigh, so if it is the IT band, it would be indirectly affecting other parts of the leg. The back of the thigh is where the hamstrings are located, and those are often tight as well. I am guessing that this is the area you're describing.1

Probably not from your IT. You may need to see a physical therapist or a specialist doctor to get it figured out. Where exactly is the pain - behind your knee? upper thigh? in your calves?0
