Does anyone do 5 miles a day on the treadmill to lose? I just started.

    Walking or running?

I've done both... Not necessarily on the treadmill though... I would rather be outside if the weather is above 40 degrees!

Losing weight happens when we take in less calories than we burn. Your treadmill workout will help increase your calorie deficit. If you enjoy the treadmill, keep going  if we keep active doing something we love we are more likely to keep consistently doing it.

    All the best.

make sure you build some rest days into your workout schedule too, running every day without a break is hard on your body

Also, relying on exercise alone without tracking calories does not work for many people. It is normal to see and increase in appetite along with an increase in exercise, without monitoring your intake it is very easy to eat more than you exercise off, and ruin any chance of weight loss.

I usually walk 5+ miles at my job. If I get on the treadmill I’m not going anywhere near that far.

No. Sounds terrible and desperate. Just do regular stuff that you enjoy

I'm assuming you don't actually love long walks/runs on the treadmill but are contemplating doing it specifically to lose weight.

I should add that I tend to get the equivalent of 5-7 miles a day but almost never on a machine.

You don't have to spend that much time on the treadmill unless you enjoy it. Personally, I'd rather do just about anything instead of running even one mile on a treadmill...and this is coming from someone who just finished half marathon #4. Maybe you're one of those people who loves treadmills, though.

All you need to do to lose weight is to eat fewer calories than you burn. Exercise of any kind will allow you to eat back your exercise calories, which means you can eat more and still lose weight. However, you don't have to exercise in order to lose weight, and you definitely don't have to walk or run five miles every day unless you enjoy doing that.

Additionally, five miles is a lot for a beginner. If you aren't used to walking or running that distance and you would actually enjoy doing it, then I'd recommend starting with a shorter distance and working your way up.

If your exercise is just to burn more calories you are going to miss out on fitness.

What I mean is cardio burns more calories than strength training.....but that in no way means strength training is unimportant. Strength training shapes weight loss results.

Eat less for weight loss, and exercise for fitness.
