Intermittent fasting, how to?

Hi there, I am looking into doing the IF thing. I like big meals and I love dinner. It sounds like I would like to do the 16:8 deal. But I have a few questions.
1. When Do I workout during the fasting days? I normally come home from an 11 hour day, go to gym, then eat dinner, then bed.
2. Do you not eat for 16 hours every day and then eat for 8? Or do you do this every other day?
3. How many days a week?
4. Do I stay in my 1500-1600 calories on the 8 hour eating days?
5. Do you really eat and drink nothing during the 16 hours?

Thank you!

Lost 40 pounds
Gym 5 days a week, try to lift in 2-3 of those days

Hello Stephanie, I actually just wrote an article over at bodybuilding.com JUST about Intermittent Fasting! I will private message you the link!

Just to mention, you can drink zero calorie soda, water, etc within the fasting hours.

You're describing the leangains approach to IF. Check out this link to begin with. It should answer a lot of your questions. The great thing about it is that it's very flexible and can be manipulated to work with your schedule

So that means you workout during the "fasting"time?
Also, you do this every day?

Why not? What's wrong with 5:2? It's explained very well & very quickly. I suggest you stick to your plan & let others decide for themselves.

Have you watched it? If you have what are your reasons for telling others not to. Even the 5:2 forums love that video.

OP watch it & then make up your OWN mind. Personally I love 5:2 & am on my 3rd fasting day today.

    I will tell you why.

He has linked you to thee 5 days eating, 2 days eating 600 calories per day, it is just a fad, unnecessary, and really, you just don't want to introduce that into your life, I promise you, lol. I have spent the last year and a half training people and testing numerous things on my life, and that is definitely not something you want to be doing.
  • Look into Martin Berkhan's website, very informative.

16:8 is no different. Really. 500 cals for women is easy. Fad. Yeah so is lifting I suppose or running.

I do 4:3 rather than 5:2. 4 days eating at 2000 cals & 3 at 500 cals..... seems as though it's still within my weekly allowance. So what's wrong now?

16:8 is completely different, don't even try and compare them, stop being so ridiculous. I don't care whether she is a woman, an alien or a flippin dog, a human deserves to eat more than 500 calories a day for 2-3 days a week, get real would you?

Sure anyone can make up their mind, but it doesn't necessarily make it the healthiest or most effective choice. I would not reccommend 5:2-it's definitely not something for the long run and the idea of consuming so little on any day is laughable.

So I am still reading the websites you guys suggested. I intake 1500-1700 a day normally. If I do the 18:6 (better for my daily life) do I consume this many calories still....or more?

Did you read through my article at bodybuilding.com, Stephanie?

Yes you consume the same amount of calories, unless you cycle carbs, calories for workout days/rest days.

Hey yea you should eat same amount calories also some women get hormone issues or something and i think Martin Berkhan has a 14/10 for women but i know alot of women who do full 24 hr fasts and have no issues so whatever you feel comfortable with really.

May I suggest that before reading and relying on the postings of a bodybuilder / coach you also try reading the reams of medical research into Intermittent Fasting.

As an exercise physiologist with access to a medical library I have spent about 18 months reading high quality medical research into the physiological and psychological benefits of IF. They are real, measurable and, for most people, achieved safely.

To dismiss it because you have found another way works for you isl in my opinion, wrong. Everyone needs to find their own, safe way to achieve a regular calorie deficit. And if the psychology of IF makes it more achievable for you, you accept that weight loss will be slower than many of the better known or more commercial diets then why not use it?

There are a number of other threads here that have some links to abstracts of medical research plus some good, unbiased, nothing to sell explanations.

I mean no disrespect to any bodybuilder posting, but please - lifting is NOT the only way! For some it is impossible for both physiological and psychological reasons. It is important to allow for some not liking your preferred way and, imo, that includes not posting against another method whilst ignoring the research into it and actively dismissing it based on no information.

As usual I will say up front that I am biased, I like IF. I also like lifting.
