Calories in bacon

So, I've been enjoying bacon a lot recently - I feel like it adds a lot of flavor to food without *that* many calories.

Anyway, so my process has been this: weigh out raw bacon, log it, cook it and then I cook something else (like a veggie) in the grease. if I use the grease to cook, am I undercounting my calories?

Thanks!

No because you're weighting all the fat in the raw bacon. The fact that it's oozing out as a liquid once you heat it doesn't change the calories.

Are you putting any oil in the pan with the bacon to start off?

Bacon is one of the few foods that is generally counted for calories after it is cooked--not weighed raw. Therefore, any bacon grease you use for subsequent cooking would need to be logged separately. There are entries in the database for bacon grease. When I do this, I cook the bacon and put it on paper towels. Then, I drain the grease from the pan into another container, and then weigh the amount of grease I want to use for the next step in the recipe. When I re-add the cooked bacon, I weigh it cooked before adding it in to the recipe.

My package says two slices is like, 70 or 90 calories! That's not accurate?!

As long as you are logging the Calorie and nutrient information for the bacon as raw, then you have already included the fat and Calories that it contained. There would be no need to log the fat separately for that day if you used and consumed all of it that day.

In the US, the raw weight of a normal slice of bacon is 1 ounce (28g), which on average has 117 Cals, 4g Protein, 11g Fat. Source: 10123, Pork, cured, bacon, unprepared

For comparison, if you discarded the rendered fat and did not use it or consume it immediately, you should log the bacon as cooked. Then you would have to account for the rendered fat separately when you eventually use it.

The pan-fried weight of a 28g raw slice after cooking and draining off the rendered fat is about 11.5g, which on average has 54 Cals, 4g Protein, 4g Fat. Source: 10862, Pork, cured, bacon, pre-sliced, cooked, pan-fried

I think every package of bacon I've ever seen also says "cooked" or "pan fried" I get thick cut bacon and the package says 70 calories for one pan fried slice.

If you're using up the leftover fat, then yeah, logging the raw weight makes sense.

I tend to weigh my cooked bacon, because I dump all the fat into my bacon jar to save for later.

I actually made some bacon soap out of my leftover bacon grease! Turned out great. Nice bubbles.
