    1) Don't workout everyday. A good plan is 2-3 days a week full-body routine, 20-30 sets total per workout.

    2) Use MFP to calculate calories required to gain 1 lb. a week.

    3) Follow through. Stay with it for 6-12 months.

    There is no reason to workout, but you should follow a structured lifting program that is suited to your abilities and goals. That means, if you are a beginner follow the link below and pick a beginner routine. On the days you do not lift, you can incorporate some cardio, flexibility training, etc..

    And set your account to gain. Monitor progress for a few weeks and if you aren't gaining, add another 250 to 400 calories.
