MFP inconsistencies in calculating calories expended for Garmin step readings

When calculating energy (calories) expended for steps walked, MFP seems to be all over the place. Sometimes MFP will tell me that 14,000 steps burns over 400 calories, but on other nights like tonight 14,000 steps will only earn me 20 +/- calories. Sometimes walking 7,000 steps earns me 600 calories. ????? Anyone else have this issue?

Its not "the steps" earning the calories but the difference between what the Garmin and what MFP thinks you'll earn for the day. So for example you could be doing some strenuous gardening: not many steps but gets your heart rate up and probably burning some calories. Other days you may wander slowly and aimlessly around a shopping centre, pretty easy going. The steps and calorie burns will be different from these. The calories just shows up against steps as that is how it is logged. But it isn't for steps, its for the difference between the MFP and Garmin estimates. Hope that makes sense.0
