As a beginner, I wouldn't jump right into body building. Start with a beginner program like Starting Strength or similar that is full body 3x per week and focuses on the basic compound movements that are the foundation of any other program.

You don't really want to be doing the kind of volume that a body building program would require as a beginner. Focus on the fundamentals and getting stronger. Down the road you can change over to a body building program or go to a more advanced strength program.

ETA: it's kinda like building a house...you don't start putting up walls and a roof before you build the foundation. Yeah, it can be a bit underwhelming and boring...but it is the foundation that is going to hold everything else up.

Yep, what wolfman said. In addition, you'll want/need the strength base to be able to use heavier weights when/if you move on to a hypertrophy-based program, so that you more effectively stimulate muscle growth.
